Description

In this lesson, students will practise a receptive skill (listening) through two recordings about some students who have just finished their final exam at university. The lesson starts with some lead-in questions, then I set the context by personalizing that I have had difficult times during exams and I will ask them about their experiences. After that, I pre-teach some blocking vocabulary, start listening for gist, listening for specific information, and another activity for specific listening. Finally, there is a follow up activity; it will be speaking activity.

Subsidiary Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, students will have practised freer speaking activity about how they can improve their English.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will ask students to look at the picture then, I will ask some questions: Which things do people usually celebrate? What was the last exam you took? Did you celebrate when you finished? If so, what did you do? Ss discuss the questions in groups. I ask ss to share interesting answers with the class.

Pre-Reading/Listening (4-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

I will set the context by telling them that I always have had difficult times during exams and I will ask them about their experiences. Then, I will pre-teach some blocking words which might block their understanding in the listening task. Words such as, celebrate, company, concert and parents.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (9-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

First, Reading for gist; I will ask ss to listen to Eric, Jenny and Melanie talking after their final university exam, and they they tick the things they talk about. Ss work alone first then they check in pairs.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-15 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

In this stage, Reading for specific information: I give ss time to read the sentences 1-6, I will give clear instructions about they are going to do . I play the recording again, ss listen and tick the true sentences. I will demo the first sentence and I will ask them to complete the rest. After that they can listen to correct the false ones. I will ask them to check in pairs. Then I open class feedback.

Post-Reading/Listening (9-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

In the final stage which is a freer speaking activity, I will tell ss that next Wednesday they will finish their course; so, I will ask them what they are going to do in order to improve their English. I will provide them with some ideas in bubbles and i will ask them to take turns asking and answering their partners about their opinions. I will provide them with some ideas like these; Read stories and novels // Read conversations // Try to write stories // Try to write a daily diary // Use internet & technology
