Upper-Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson: Ss will have a lead-in about families and the relationship between parents and their children. To prepare them for the text, T will elicit the new vocabulary and Ss will predict the topic of listening. Ss will listen to the audio listening “one by one” to answer a question for gist about the relationship between parents and their children. For listening for details, Ss will listen to the task to answer another question the sentences that are similar to the ones in the recorder. For post listening "free practice", Ss will talk about their parents and family life past and present. There will be a feedback after the discussion.

Main Aims

  • • For students to practice listening for gist and for details in the context of "Me and my parents".

Subsidiary Aims

  • • By the end of this lesson, Ss will be able to speak about their parents and their family life in the context of “Me and my family".

Procedure

Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-T greets Ss and shows Ss two pictures about two different families. -Ss are given two minutes to discuss the picture by asking some CCQs like: What can you see here? Are they happy or sad? Why? Which one is for present or for past? What do you think how old the children are now? - T elicits from the answers that Ss have an idea about the topic "Me and my parents".

Listening (4-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

-T shows 7 different words and phrases related to the listening task. -T shows Ss some pictures to help Ss understand the words and phrases. -T elicits from the students the meanings of the 7 vocabulary items. -T asks CCQ’s on the different vocabulary items. - T asks Ss to repeat the words to know the right pronunciation.

While-Listening Activity- (Gist) (8-10 minutes) • To practice listening for specific information in the audio.

-T asks Ss to listen to four different situations about the topic. -T asks Ss to answer question 8 at SB p. 93. It's about Who had a good relationship? Who didn't? Why? -Ss listen to the audio and then, answer the questions alone. - Ss discuss their answers in pairs. - T shows Ss the answers after they finish.

While-Listening Activity- (Listening for details) (12-15 minutes) • To gain a deeper understanding of the listening.

-T asks Ss to listen again to the audio "one by one" to take notes to help them answer the questions at SB p.93 Ex.9 alone for each situation. -Ss check the answers with their partners in BORs. -T checks the answers and gives them feedback.

Post-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To give Ss a chance to practice speaking skills based on their understanding of the listening.

T asks Ss to think of the question 10 at p.93 as it is about speaking about your parents your family life, present and past. T asks Ss to discuss the answers in pairs. Ss check the answers with their partners in BORs. T chooses some Ss to speak about the task. T gives Ss their feedback.
