Elementary level

Description

In this lesson about vocabulary to do with shopping, students will follow a Test Teach Test framework. Towards the end students will engage in freer practice.

Materials

No materials added to this plan yet.

Main Aims

  • By the end of this lesson students will have learned a new vocabulary in the context of shopping and have practiced controlled listening and speaking.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a controlled dialogue in the context of shopping

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I'll ask the students if they like shopping. Yesterday, I bought these shoes. My favorite thing to go shopping for is clothing. What do you like to shop for? Do you like shopping for electronics? Clothes? Makeup? Maybe food, because you like cooking or eating. Discuss in pairs. Elicit some more responses. Then I will have students tick the words in the vocabulary boxes that they know.

Test #1 (3-5 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

The students will receive a gist activity to test their knowledge of the vocabulary words and help them to understand the context of today's lesson. The task will be a matching words with pictures worksheet. They will check in pairs and then I will display the answer sheet.

PTV (10-15 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

I will teach the students the new vocabulary to help them to better understand the next test and be able to complete the task. Vocab: stamps tissues aspirin guide book suitcase postcard receipt pin number change

Test #2 (8-10 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

This test will be a listening test in which they must fill in the blank on a worksheet with the vocabulary words they have just learned. The students will then check together in pairs. And listen once more to check their answers. Then I will display the answer sheet.

Free practice (10-15 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

I will first model some sentences in a written dialogue with the students and make them repeat after me to teach them intonation and pronunciation. Students will now role play and say the dialogue with each other back and forth. With one student being the sales assistant and the other being the customer. I will monitor during this process and correct any pronunciation errors I hear.
