To develop students’ ability to talk about past habits using used to in the context of talking about things you did in the past
To improve students’ ability to talk about the things they did in the past and stopped doing it now
Procedure (37-49 minutes)
- T shows ss 4 pictures of chocolate, cigarette, cycling, and someone smoking. - T asks ss: - Did you smoke in the past? once or many times? - Did you ride a bike in the past? - Did you eat chocolate in the past? once or many times? - T listens to ss answers and writes it down.
T asks ss to write 3 sentences about things they did in the past and don not do now. T writes the ss answers on board and tells ss that we use used to talk about past habits. - T tells ss to write a sentence using"used to"
- Now T asks ss to write 3 sentences about things they do now but didnt do in the past. - T writes the students' answers and tells them that we use the negative form "did + not + use + to + infinitive to tells about things we do now and we did not do in the past. - T asks ss to tell about one thing they do now and did not in the past using /didnt use to/ - T highlights that /did not use to/ is followed by infinitive - T also highlihts that after did not we say /use/ not /used/
- T displays ho1 and asks ss to take 5 min answering the questions in pairs - T listens to students answers and writes it down - T discusses the questions with ss and writes the answers on the board. - T supports that we use /used to+inf/ to talk about habits in the past. (feedback) - T tells that we use did not use to to talk about things you did not do in the past.(feedback) - T tells about forming a question using used to. (feedback) T displays ho2 and asks ss to take 5 min answering the multiple choice questions. - T listens to ss answers and supports with feedback.
-T displays ho3 which is a gap filling handout and tells ss to answer the questions in 5 mins. - T asks ss to pair check their answers together. - T listens to ss answers and supports with the answers on the board. - T displays ho4 which is find the mistake handout and tells ss to answer the questions individually. - T checks the answers with ss and writes it on the board.
- T displays ho5 and asks ss to talk with their partners and tell about 2 things they used to do in the past and stopped. - Another 2 things they do now and they did not do in the past. - T supports with final feedback.
