In this lesson, students will have the opportunity to develop their listening and vocabulary skills related to the topic "LONDON"

Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, students will be better able to listen and follow daily life of a person.
  • By the end of the lesson , they will be better able to develop their ability to listen for gist and specific information in daily life talks.

Subsidiary Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, students will have learned some everyday adjectives and will have had the opportunity to practice them while talking about the city they live in.

Procedure

Warm-up (3-5 minutes) • To enable students to relax and start feeling comfortable in the class. To check their adjective knowledge.

Teacher asks about Izmir. She shows some pictures of İzmir and asks students whether they like İzmir or not. She draws a spiderweb and writes İzmir in the middle. She asks students to tell some adjectives related to İzmir.

Introduce Context (3-5 minutes) • To introduce and interest students in the topic of London.

Teacher asks students other big cities in the world. ( she expects the answer London) Then, she writes London on the board and asks the students what they know about London. Teacher draws another spider-web and writes London in the middle. Students then work in pairs add adjectives about London around the spider-web. Teacher monitors them and check later.

Pre-Teach Vocabulary (8-10 minutes) • To check/ enable students to learn vocabulary which is essential for the listening task.

Teacher shows the powerpoint and explains yhe activity. She asks them to match the adjectives with the pictures. In each picture there is one extra word. This is a whole class activity. Teacher shows four sentences on the board and asks students to complete them with adjectives. She asks students to share their sentences with their partners. Extra: Teacher may want students to add extra sentences.

Pre-Listening Task (4-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the listeniing task.

Teacher introduces Annalisa. She asks the students what information they might learn about her. Teacher makes group of 4 people and wants them to think. ( age, job, where she is from, etc. ) Teacher shows the picture of "Underground" and asks whether they know it. If they don't know teacher can use hangman.

Gist Listening (3-5 minutes) • To enable students to develop their ability to listen for gist. To build confidence and check comprehension.

Teacher shows handout and indicates there there are four pictures but Analisa talks about three pictures. Students have to listen and match the dialogues with the pictures. Students check in pairs while teaacher monitors. Teacher plays again if necessary. Whole class feedback.

Listening for Specific Information #1 (3-5 minutes) • To enable students to develop their ability to listen for specific information.

Teacher shows Ss handout and gells them there are 7 sentences. Some of the sentences are true, some are false. Teacher inform Ss they will listen to same audio and put a tick for true sentences and put a cross for false sentences. Teacher does the first one as example. Teacher plays the audio. Students check in pairs. Teacher monitors. Teacher may play audio again if necessary. Whole class feedback.

Listening for Specific Information #2 (3-5 minutes) • To enable students to develop their ability to listen for specific information.

Teacher shows Ss the same handout and tells them they are going to correct the false sentences. Teacher does the first one as example. Teacher plays the audio. Students check in pairs. Teacher monitors. Teacher may play audio again if necessary. Whole class feedback.

Focus Students on Functional Language (3-5 minutes) • To make the students more familiar with the conversations.

Students work in pairs or groups to fill in the gaps in the given activity. Whole class feedback

Freer Practice (5-7 minutes) • To give Ss the opportunity to use their newly acquired language in a freer context

Teacher shows the picture of Istanbul and tells the students it is her favourite city. She uses the adjectives big and nice. She talks about people and weather also. She wants the students to think 1 minute about their favourite city and may be take small notes. Then she wants students to stand up and askothers about their favourite cities and take notes about them. Teacher monitors and provides delayed feedback if necessary.
