Description

In this lesson, students will practice spelling and "to be" related to the topic "celebrities".

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide an opportunity for students to develop their speaking skills
  • To provide an opportunity for students to develop their ability to listen for specific information
  • To provide an opportunity for students to write basic information about themselves.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide and opportunity for students to learn new vocabulary.

Procedure

Spelling (5-6 minutes) • To practice the alphabet

Ask your name to Ss and write it on the board. Ask one of the Ss to spell it. Ask that S to come in front of the board Ask his/her name to other Ss and the one who knows will write it on the board After this step the S in front of the board should ask his/her name to other Ss and this activity goes on until all the Ss spell a name.

Pre-Listening (1-2 minutes) • To warn students about spelling double sounds

Write the names "izzet, mukaddes and abdurrahman" on the board and ask Ss to spell them.

Listening (2-3 minutes) • To prepare students for the listening tasks.

Tell Ss that they will listen only the first half of the recording. Play the audio file and ask Ss to check in pairs

Pre-Listening (4-5 minutes) • To introduce the symbols used in e-mail addresses

Write your e-mail address on the board and ask Ss to say it. Write the symbols used in e-mail addresses on the board. ( .dot, -dash, _underscore) Ask Ss to work in pairs and say their email addresses to each other. (They could talk more about themselves)

Listening (1-2 minutes) • To prepare students for the listening tasks related to spelling

Tell Ss that they will listen to the second part of the recording Play the audio file.

Speaking (3-4 minutes) • To enable to students to make affirmative and negative sentences with "to be"

Reflect the "Facts about me" file on the board and tell Ss to think about the sentences for 1 minute with their partner. Ask Ss if they are F or T.

Writing (3-4 minutes) • To enable to students to write sentences using "to be"

Tell Ss to write 5 sentences (some T and some F) about themselves on a piece of paper. When they finish, collect them.

Speaking (6-7 minutes) • To enable to students to make sentences using the phrase "I think"

Choose one of the papers and quess if the sentences are T or F (I think) Handout those papers and let Ss guess

Writing (10-12 minutes) • To enable students to make affirmative sentences about celebrities.

Reflect the "celebrities" file on the board ask Ss if they know the meaning of "celebrity" Show the pictures of the celebrities and ask Ss what they know about them. Handout the copies to Ss. Tell them to complete the gaps. Tell them to check their answers with their partners. Open the file with the blanks and complete them.

Game - Hangman (Optional) (4-5 minutes) • To make the students more familiar with the words from the lesson and the day before

Explain Ss how to play hangman (Divide the students into two groups, draw the lines for the word, tell them that they will guess another letter if their guess for the letter is correct, they can guess the word only when it's their turn, the team with more points wins) Words to be revised (eggplant, celebrity, parents, single, musician)
