'Matchmaking' - a Listening Lesson

Description

In this lesson, students will be listening to a radio show where two professional matchmakers share their craft and inform the listeners about modern matchmaking practices.

Main Aims

  • To provide detailed listening practice using a text about matchmaking in the context of marriage

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a discussion in the context of matchmaking and marriage

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- T will welcome Ss into the lesson and open slide 1. - T will ask Ss to discuss how people meet and get married. - T will show slide 2 and receives Ss answers. - T will show slide 3 and ask Ss how their parents met. - T will ask the Ss if they know what 'matchmaking' is. -T will start telling a short story of how her parents were introduced to each other through matchmaking to provide a solid example for the Ss. (Her parents meet thorugh a bookstore owner who thins they would be a good couple since they are always reading the same books.)

Pre-Reading/Listening (5-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

-T shares a link on the chat box and invites students to complete the vocabulary game in pairs. - After students finish the game, T invites them back and asks who was able to match correctly every word in the first try.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

-T opens slide 13 and explains to the Ss that they will be answering some questions according to a radio program. - T asks Ss to read the three questions first. -T asks Ss to write down their answers. -T informs them they will be listening only the beginning of the radio program. -T plays audio 7.10. - After that, T opens slide 14 to show answers.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

-T opens slide 15 an asks Ss to read the questions and think about possible answers. -T asks Ss to write down their answer while listening to the show. -T starts audio 7.11. -T asks if the students would like to listen again. Acts accordingly. - After the listening, T opens slide 16 and asks Ss to check their answers. -T asks Ss if they have any questions.

Post-Reading/Listening (6-8 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

-T opens slide 17. - T nominates Ss to answer the questions. - T gives feedback and asks Ss if they have any question.
