Description

In this lesson, Ss learn reading for gist and reading for detal. In the lead-in session, Ss will have the chance to warm up and personalize the topic. T will pre-teach vocabulary. As a while reading activity, they will first read for gist and then they will read at their own pace for detailed information. As post-reading activity they will talk about their own preferences about eating.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about Eating around the world in the context of Food

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of food

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-Show the map of food -ask them to guess the context "What will we talk about today?" Elicit answers. -Show them the second slide. Show them how to do the activity by doing it with a student. -Tell them they will be in breakout rooms and do a pairwork asking and answering those questions for 2 minutes. (If there are 3 Ss or less they will do it in the main session). - Get whole class feedback.

Pre-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

-Show slide 3 and ask the question. Elicit answers. -Tell the Ss that we'll be reading about them in a minute, - Show slide 4, say "match the words with pictures. First, do it alone for 1 minute. - monitor the Ss after finishing say "now, I'll put you in breakout rooms, discuss your answers with your partner, then meet me here (in the main session) in 2 minutes. - Elicit the answers -Show them slide no 5, give the instruction "match the words with the picture" wait for 30 sec. - Elicit the answers. - Ask them the question on the slide. Ask them to discuss it with their partners in breakout rooms. - Elicit the answers -show the Ss slide no 6 - Show the words first, ask the CCQs written on the slide later. -Elicit the answers.

While-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading

-Show the Ss slide no 7. - say "now you see a text. You will read the text twice. The first time very quickly to do this first activity. And then the second time much more slowly." -" you have 1 minute, look at the text very quickly and match the pictures with the family names this time" -put them in breakout rooms to discuss their answers (PW) - elicit the answers

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more detailed tasks

-Show slide no8 -ask the Ss if they have any word that they don't know in the questions - if there are any, elicit the answers from Ss again. - tell them clearly that they don't have to understand each and every word in the text to do the activity. It is ok if there are some unknown words. - Give them chance to read at their own pace this time saying "take your time this time, you don't have to read quickly, you can read slowly now." - Monitor the class once they finish, put them into breakout rooms to discuss the answers in pair. - elicit the answers. - share the answers.

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

-Show the Ss Slide no 10 and ask them to think about it individually for a few minutes. -monitor the class. once they finish, put them into breakout rooms for at least 3 min to discuss their answers with their partners. - after coming back, elicit the answers. - thank the students and end the lesson
