Main Aims

  • Students wiil have been introduced to the meaning, pronunciation and form and been given opportunities for controlled and freer oral practice of a lexical set of words related to food and drinks for breakfast.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Students will have developed their ability to listen for specific information with particular reference to a conversation about breakfast.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

What do you have for breakfast? First, I model about myself saying, For breakfast, I usually have cheese, eggs and tea. What do you usually have for breakfast? Students answer and ask each others. OCF

Test #1 (8-10 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

T: Match the words with their pictures. S: students answer the task. T: show Ss maps of Turkey, Japan and France and ask them questions to prepare them to the prediction stage before listening. Ex: Where is Japan? Is it in Asia? What do you think people in Japan have for breakfast? Do you think they have foul and falafel? What other food do you think they eat? T : ask the same questions about Turkey and France. Then I ask Ss to write their ideas with a minimum of two words on the HO. ICQs: Are you going to write long sentences? No Are you going to work alone or in pairs? Alone Then students listen to a conversation of a chef and his assistant about breakfast in France, Turkey and Japan to check their ideas. FB: Were your ideas similar or different?

Teach (10-15 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

Show Ss some pictures and ask What is this? How can we pronounce it? Where is the strongest part of the word? Can we count it? T follow MPF technique in presenting the target language.

Test #2 (8-10 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

T ask Ss to choose the correct answer in order to prepare them to the next controlled practice. Ss answer. Then open class feedback. Controlled Practice: T ask students to use the words in ex a to complete the tables on the wall. Each group check others answers. ICQs: Are you going to check your group writing? No Are you going to check other groups' writing? Yes OCF

Free practice (7-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language
