Description

In this lesson, Ss listen to an interview with Jane Cadwallader who is one of the founder members of the charity "Adelante Africa." The lesson starts with a pre-listening task about Jane and her charity. This is followed by two while-listening tasks to allow Ss to practice listening for specific information and detailed comprehension. Finally, there is post-reading task where Ss have an opportunity to personalize the topic and have discussions.

Main Aims

  • To give students practice in listening for gist and detail in the context of changing lives.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To give students clarification of vocabulary in the context of changing lives.

Procedure

Lead-in (4-6 minutes) • To generate interest about the topic and activate schematic knowledge

T will show pictures of the "Adelante Africa" charity to the Ss and ask them two questions about the pictures. Then, the T will show a short video of Jane singing an English song with poor African children. Next, the T will put the Ss in groups and give them some questions about the video to discuss in their groups.

Pre-teach Vocabulary (3-5 minutes) • To clarify the blocking vocabulary to help Ss comprehend the listening

The T will clarify the blocking vocabulary through MFP and then, she will ask CCQ questions to the Ss to check their understanding of the vocabulary.

Gist Reading (4-6 minutes) • To comprehend the listening as a whole

First, Ss will read the questions individually and Then, they will listen to an interview and answer two questions about the interview individually. Ss check their answers in pairs. WCF

Listening for specific information (8-10 minutes) • To practice listening for specific information and to further familiarize Ss with the listening.

First, Ss will read the task individually. Then, T will play the listening and Ss will write down their answers. T will play the listening again if necessary. Ss check their answers in pairs. WCF

Listening for detail (8-10 minutes) • To practice listening for detailed comprehension.

First, Ss read the activity and then, they will listen to the second part of the listening and correct the wrong information according to the listening. Ss check answers in pairs. WCF

Follow-up Activity (5-8 minutes) • To give students the opportunity to practice listening for inferred meanings and to personalize the topic.

First, T will show a logo of a famous charity in Turkey and elicit some information about it to model the task for the Ss and then, in groups, Ss will speak about a charity they know about that they'd like to work with. Also, T will give some prompts to the Ss. In the end, T will ask some group members about what they discussed in their group.
