Description

This is a reading lesson whose intention is to provide Ss with opportunities to develop their reading for gist and detail.

Materials

No materials added to this plan yet.

Main Aims

  • To provide reading practice for gist and detail in the context of worst case scenarios.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of vocabulary related to crisis that might be useful to Ss.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will show my Ss pictures of earthquake , lightning, and a charging bull ,and I will ask them the following questions 1-What can you see in each picture? 2- Do you know what to do in these circumstances? make a list of your ideas. I will ask Ss to discuss these questions in pairs in BORs.

Pre-Reading/Listening (5-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

I will work on meaning of the flow of blood, hallway ,and kneel. I will use Google Slides and nominate Ss to match words to photos and definitions, using arrows. CCQ: How does the blood move? (continuously) CCQ: What is another word for flow of blood? (blood circulation) CCQ: Can you eat or watch TV in a hallway? (No) CCQ:Is it inside or outside a building? (no matter) CCQ: Which part of your body are you resting on when you kneel? (knee) CCQ: Which knee is on the ground? (no matter) Then, I will work on form and pronunciation of the same words. I will use Google Form and post the link in chat. Answers: 1. Hallway is a countable noun. ( I will highlight the form by drawing a circle around the double L ) 2.Flow and kneel have one syllable.( I will model words and ask Ss to drill) 3. Kneel is a verb. (I will ask Ss what is the past form of kneel) 4. Hallway have two syllables and the stress is on the first syllable. (I will model the word and ask Ss to drill) 5. Flow can be a verb.( I will ask Ss to give example)

While-Reading/Listening #1 (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

I will ask Ss to read quickly and answer the following questions 1. Which ideas on your list were correct ? 2. Were you surprised by any of the advice? I will ask them to check their ideas in pairs in chat- monitor and help if necessary

While-Reading/Listening #2 (10-11 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

I will ask Ss to read the text individually for detailed understanding. Then, I will share the link of Google Form in the chat. Also, I will tell Ss the answers are not always fully stated in text, they may have to read between lines. I will ask them focus on finding the answers and ignore words they do not know that are not relevant. Work on your own. You have 8 minutes to do the task. ICQ: How long you work in this task ? (8 minutes) ICQ: In pairs or individually? (Individually) 1. Why should not the splint on a broken leg be too tight? (Because it might reduce/stop/cut off circulation/the flow of blood) 2.Why do you think the kitchen is a dangerous place in an earthquake? (Because there are machines using electricity and gas/ there is a danger of fire. 3. Why are hallways and inside walls safer, do you think? (Hallways are enclosed and provide protection from falling bricks, also they have little furniture to fall over and hurt you inside walls have no glass to break and cut.) 4.Why it is helpful to count the time between lightning and thunder? (Because it tells you how near the storm is ) 5. Why do you think you should kneel rather than lie flat on the ground to avoid lightning? (If you lie flat ,your body surface increases and gives a bigger area for the lightning to hit) Now ,you have 3 minutes to compare your answers in pairs using chat before OCFB

Post-Reading/Listening (16-18 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

I will ask Ss to discuss the following questions in BORs for 6-7 minutes 1. Have you , or anyone you know ever experienced these or similar dangers? What happened? 2.What kind of disasters most frighten you? why? I will monitor and write examples of errors on the Whiteboard. DEC in OC
