Main Aims

  • Vocabulary: To provide practice and clarification of vocabulary related to jobs.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Speaking: To provide fluency and accuracy in talking about their future jobs.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-Show a video that contains a couple of jobs to elicit the topic and engage the students. -Ask which jobs did they see. -Ask them about the jobs they would like to have.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

-Show the flash cards to elicit the words. -Get them to describe what each job is about. -Ask them why do we need jobs.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

-Divide into groups -Show them a text that has some of the new vocabulary. -Get them to underline the new words. Ask ICQs: 1. What are you going to do? Underline the words. 2. Which words are you going to underline? The jobs words. 3. Are you working in groups or pairs? Groups. 4. How long do you have? 3 minutes.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

-Show each flash card separately. -Ask Concept Checking Questions (CCQs) - Drill each word chorally and individually. Doctor (n.) Definition: Treats people who are sick or injured. Transcription: |ˈdɑːktər| CCQs: 1.Do we go there when we feel okay? No, 2. Do we go there when we feel sick? Yes. 3. Does he/she makes us feel better? Yes. 4. Does he/she work in a hospital? Yes. Teacher (n.) Definition: is a person who helps students to learn. Transcription: |ˈtiːtʃər| CCQs: 1. Does he/she work in a club? No. 2. Does he/she work in a school? Yes. 3. Do we learn from them? Yes. Police Officer (n.) Definition: keeps everyone safe. Transcription: |pəˈliːs ɑːfəsər| CCQ: 1. Do they catch good people? No. 2. Do they catch people who hurt us? Yes. 2. Does he/she make us feel safe? Yes. 3. Does he/she have a uniform? Yes. Fireman (n.) Definition: help to protect people from fire. Transcription: |ˈfaɪərmən| CCQs: 1. Do they work in a restaurant? No. 2. Do they help protect people? Yes. 3. Do they wear a uniform? Yes. 4. Do they have a truck that is full of water? Yes.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

-Divide them into pairs. -Play a game with the flash cards where they match the job to its description. -Ask ICQs: 1. What are you going to do? Match the word to its meaning. 3. Are you going to work in pairs or groups? Pairs. 4. What is the time allowed for you to do this? 2 minutes.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

-Divide into groups. -They write sentences using the new vocabulary. -Get feedback from other groups. -Ask ICQs: 1. What are you going to do? Write sentences. 2. Are you going to use the new words? Yes. 3. Are you going to work individually or in a group? Groups. 4. What is the time allowed for you to do this? 3 minutes.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

-Divide into groups. -Each group will pick a job to talk about. -They will mention at least 4 reason why we should have this job and why it is important. -Get feedback from other groups. -Give my own feedback. Ask ICQs: 1. What are you going to do? Pick a job and talk about it. 2. Are you going to work individually or in groups? In groups. 3. How long do you have? 10 minutes.
