Description

In this lesson , students learn about the collocations in English especially the verb collocations through the guided discovery based on a reading text about a personal experience for a student with his school .The lesson starts in a brainstorm about the school subjects followed by exposing the reading text then highlighting the TL .This will be followed by clarifying the meaning of TL , different forms of the verb collocations in the sentences in terms of tense and the use of prepositions or being the object of the sentence. The practice stage will be started by a controlled practice which students will do in pairs in 3 minutes , then followed by a semi controlled practice which will be done in pairs in 5 minutes. Finally , the freer practice in which students will practice speaking in pairs talking about their personal experience in their school. The wrap up will be the last stage .

Main Aims

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- T starts the lesson by greeting them and asking them about their favourite school subjects. - T elicits some responses to the question . - T shows students some photos for the school subjects and elicits the name of each subject.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

-T gives Ss a reading task with a scanning question. - T divides students into groups of three . - T sends Ss to BORs - T elicits the correct answers from Ss after ending the BORs.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

-T highlight the TL and draws students attention to the form ( noun + verb).

Clarification (5-6 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

- T elicits the the term collocations and its definition . - T clarifies the meaning of collocations . - T asks CCQs about the meaning . - T elicits the other forms of the collocations in English by showing them the sentence first. - T asks Ss some CCQs. - T elicits some examples of the most common verb collocations in English. - T shows Ss some more examples of verb collocations. - T elicits the difference between the sentences which the tense that is used in each sentence. -T asks CCQs. -T elicits the difference between the two sentences which is the existence of the preposition to and having the collocation as the object of the sentence. - T asks CCQs.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

-T starts giving Ss the first controlled practice . -T divides Ss into pairs and gives them 3 minutes to finish the exercise . -T asks ICQs. - T send Ss to BORs and monitors Ss while answering the task. - T provides feedback as this is an accuracy stage.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

- T gives Ss the semi-controlled practice which is in the form of find the mistakes. - T gives Ss 5 minutes as pair work to finish the task . - T asks ICQs. - T monitors the groups . - T gives feedback after ending the BORs.

Free Practice (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

-T asks Ss to express what did they enjoy doing in their school using some of the collocations that they have just learned. - T gives Ss 5 minutes for this exercise and asks ICQs before sending them to the BORs. - T monitors Ss and writes down some notes to be discussed at the end of this stage in the form of the question " Find the incorrect sentence" .These mistakes are the ones that Ss but have been delayed as it's a fluency stage.
