Main Aims

  • For Ss to practice reading skills in the context of tools

Subsidiary Aims

  • For Ss to use vocabulary to retell a short version of the story in the context of tools

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-T draws a family tree and elicits the names of the characters from the story in the starter unit -T elicits their relationship to one another -T asks Ss what they remember about the previous story -T tells Ss that today's story takes place at the club Libby mentioned in the starter -T asks Ss what the club is called -T asks Ss to make predictions about Libby's club: 1.What kind of club is it? 2.What do they do there?

Pre-Reading (3-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

-T asks Ss to focus on the pictures and the story -T asks Ss the following questions: 1.Where are Ed and Kate are going? 2.What are they going to do?

While-Reading #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

-T plays the recording and asks Ss to listen and follow the words in the story -T asks Ss the gist question -T plays the recording again and asks more comprehension questions: 1.What does Fin have? 2.Who is good at art? 3.What is Libby is going to paint?

While-reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide Ss an opportunity to repeat and mime the story

-T plays the recording again and pauses for Ss to repeat -T divides the class into five to play different characters -T plays the recording again and asks Ss to listen and mime -T divides the class into groups and ask Ss to practice acting out the story in the groups -T asks one or two groups to act out the story for the class

While-Reading/Listening #2 (3-5 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

-T looks at the example -T asks Ss to read the sentences silently and decide if they are true or false -Ss do the exercise (differentiation) -T checks the answers with the whole class

Post-Reading/Listening (3-5 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

-T asks Ss to retell a short version of the story to the class
