Description

In this lesson, students receive clarification and practice language that is used to say one is surprised or not surprised. This lesson will begin with a lead in activity where students will have to briefly answer the question "When was the last time you were surprised" in BORs with partner. In the exposure stage, Ss will read a text and answer a question in relation to the text. This will be followed by clarification. In this stage Ss will be prompted with activities that will aid in their understanding of MAFP. In the controlled stage, students will be prompted to multiple short conversations. Students will have to select phrases that do not belong as proper responses to the conversation. The last stage will be a communicative task where Ss will have the opportunity to use the target language.

Main Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of being surprised or not surprised

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-Students will be prompted to two question on Google Jamboard. -Students will be placed breakout rooms to tell their partners about a time they have been surprised or not surprised. -Students will return to main Zoom room and T will ask one group to share their answers.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

- T will share a link to Google Form. Ss will read the text individually and answer as many questions as possible (3 minutes.) - Ss will be placed in BORs and will have to answer the questions located underneath the text (4 min) -Ss will return to main zoom room for quick feedback with T (1 min)

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

-T will open Google Slides. -Ss will be placed in BORs to complete a fill in the gap task (3 min) -Ss will return to main Zoom room. Ss will briefly go over answers (1 min) -T will screen share a new Google slide. -T will guide students to find the stressed words, linking sounds, and intonations in the 4 sentences taken from the text. -T will drill Ss by having Ss repeat the sentences in different ways: Disbelief, angry, sarcastic, curious -T will then ask Ss where the intonations are throughout the sentence: Does the end of the sentence go up or down? Does it go up or down anywhere else in the statement?

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

-T will share link to Google Form. -Ss will be prompted to read the text and mark the responses that do not belong. -T will demo the first question and will have Ss choose one of two responses that does not belong. (1 min) -Ss will work on this task individually (4 min) -Ss will be placed into BORs to review answers (4 min)

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

-Ss will be prompted to a Google Jamboard. -Ss will have to discuss with their partner about a time they received good or bad news. -T will demo by having a Ss ask the first question. -Ss will discuss in BORs for 5 min. -T will monitor BORs and type phrases as said by Ss -Ss will return to main Zoom room and T will have Zoom whiteboard open with the phrases said by Ss typed out. -Ss will have to correct any grammatical errors/expression errors. (3 min)
