Main Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of receiving an inheritance

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide scan reading practice using a text about Bill Gates, family and pets in the context of Inheritance

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Students will be directed to a Google Jamboard. Students will be presented with three questions. The first two questions students will briefly discuss along with the teacher. The teacher will then place students into Breakout Rooms for about 2 minutes to discuss their answer to the third question with their peers.

Useful Language (8-8 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

The students will be prompted to Google Slides. The first slide will contain the words inherit, inheritance, and inherited. These are words which will be found in the text and have slightly different definitions from one another despite the similarity in spelling. Teacher will ask students to read the definition out loud. The second slide contains three words also found in the text but may be a bit difficult for students to understand. Students will review all the new vocabulary words in order to prepare for the brief reading of the text

Exposure (8-8 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Students will be provided a link to Google Form. This form contains the text for students to read and a few questions for Ss to answer individually. Ss will have 5 minutes to read and answer. They will then be placed in break out rooms where they will discuss answers with their peers for 2 minutes. Students will return to the main zoom class where we will briefly discuss the answers.

Productive Task(s) (18-18 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Students will be placed in pairs and will discuss three questions regarding the text they previously read for about 6-7 minutes. Students will return to main Zoom room and teacher will prompt students with two new questions in regards to advantages/disadvantages of getting a large fortune. Students will be placed with new partners to discuss their answers for 6 minutes. If time allows, students will receive new partners to review and discuss answers to the current questions.

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

T will have monitored each group in the previous task to have an idea as to what class needs to review. T will ask certain students to repeat what their group discussed. T will use zoom whiteboard to type phrases said by Ss that contain errors. T will ask Ss to correct the phrases collectively.
