Description

In this lesson, students learn how to read and find information about how different nationalities spend their free time. They will be exposed to the context in the lead in and once they are provided clarification with blocking vocabulary they will read for gist and then detail. Finally they will have the opportunity to personalize the context and practice speaking about how people spend their free time in their country or city.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about free time in the context of how different nationalities spend their free time.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking about what people do in their countries in their free time.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-T greets Ss and makes sure all are ready. -T uses two of the questions from the while reading task hint them the context. -T brefly elicits what the Ss see in the images and finally asks them to guess the answer -Ss guess and T writes the guesses on the WB to check later on.

Pre-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

-T gives S questions and asks them to work in PW -Ss have 2 miniutes to guess the answers. -Ss meet for feed back and T writes possible guesses on WB -T can now clarify any blocking vocabulary or phases for the next stage.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

-Ss work alone to answer the question -PW for peer check -class feed back, further support with vocabulary and pronounciaiton. -T shows answers/ compare with previous predictions.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

-T sets instructions for detailed reading -Ss work alone first -PW for peer check. -Class feedback (corrections on pronunciation- drilling) -T reveals answers.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

-T finds out which cities they are from and mixes up the groups. (dynamics) -T gives out instructions -S work in PW to talk about how people spend their free time in the city they live. -T monitors to support with vocabulary -Ss talk about their partners cities - T notes errors and elicits the corrections from Ss.
