Reading
B1 level

Description

In this lesson, Ss practice reading for gist and detail in the context of a reading text titled ‘One size doesn't fit all.’ The lesson starts with a discussion about the definition of the title of the lesson. This is followed by skimming the reading text where Ss read for gist and mark three sentences true or false. Then Ss scan the text to find a phrase and what the author says about this phrase. Finally there is a critical thinking exercise where Ss work individually to find arguments and take notes.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, scan and inference reading practice using a text about inventions in the context of appropriate technology

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will ask Ss to think of two pieces of equipment (not computer-related) which you have at home. They should be things you use a lot and which you really cannot do without. They should be things with moving parts, not simple objects like a knife or a pen. Then I will ask them to talk about their objects in a group of four. Finally, I will elicit a few examples from the whole class.

Pre-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

1 I will ask Ss to explain the meaning of one size doesn't fit all. Also, I will ask Ss to suggest answers to the question (What products could it be applied to?).

While-Reading #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist reading task

2 I will read through the three sentences with the class to focus their reading, then ask them to read quickly and find if they are true or false. Finally, I will elicit answers from the class. 3 I will ask Ss to find the phrase and what the author says about this. Then I will elicit the answers from the class. 4 I will ask Ss to work in pairs and discuss what the devices are. I will check their answers, then ask how the author uses them in the text.

While-Reading #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

5 I will ask students to read the sentences and choose the correct meaning. Then I will elicit the answers from the whole class.

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

6 I will ask Ss to address the arguments (What are the potential risks and benefits associated with appropriate technology?) individually. 7 I will ask Ss to compare their answers. Then I will elicit answers from the class.
