Description

In this lesson, students will learn about degrees of certainty with modal verbs through guided discovery based on listening an audio about people experiencing a crime.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of modal verbs describing degrees of certainty in the context of unfortunate crime experiences, such as being robbed or scammed.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a text about conversations talking of unfortunate events in the context of crime
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a sharing personal experiences in the context of unfortunate crime experiences, such as being robbed or scammed.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Students will complete a True/False activity about cybercrime statements, so they get familiar with vocabulary and relate to experiencing a crime. SS do task in BOR, 2 min. T asks S to check their answers, and asks them if they learned new information. T clarifies vocabulary if needed. OC 2 min.

Text Work (8-9 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Students will listen to an audio with two conversations about people experiencing being robbed and scammed. Task 1- Gist: Students will hear the audio (2 min) and answer the following questions: -What crime occurred in Conversation 1? -What crime occurred in Conversation 2? - Are they describing a past or present situation? OC, 2 min. Task 2-Specific information: Students hear the audio (2 min) again while they complete a fill-in the gap activity where they will be exposed to the target language. Students will discuss their answers in groups. BOR, 2 min. OCFB, 1 min.

Clarification (10-12 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Modal verbs of certainty. Teacher will emphasize how to express being sure or unsure about a situation. Students will do MFPA tasks: 1) Meaning: SS will place statements in a cline describing certainty, while exemplifying affirmative and negative statements. Jamboard in BOR, 2 min. OC to further clarify, 2 min. 2) Form: T will elicit the for: affirmative, negative, and interrogative, from students. Jamboard in BOR, 2 min. OC to further clarify, 2 min. 3) Pronunciation: T gives an oral model of each sentence. Elicit students the stressed words. OC 4 min.

Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students will complete a hand-out containing sentences, they will have to choose the most appropriate modal verb and conjugate the verbs into the correct form. Google Forms, BOR, 6 min. OCFB 2 min.

Free Practice (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Teacher will share personal experience about being robbed/scammed to model the activity and incite students to share their own experience. Students will share their unfortunate experience in groups, using modal verbs of certainty. BOR, 6 min. OC, 2 min

Feedback & DEC (2-3 minutes) • To provide learners with feedback and inform them of how they did with regards to content and language used.

Teacher conducts OCFB. Teacher conduct DEC (accurate and inaccurate language).
