Description

In this lesson, students will practice listening for gist and specific information in the context of leisure activities. Students will also practice MFP on selected blocking lexis.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a text about a survey about how people spend their free time. in the context of leisure activities such as exercise, playing video games, going to the cinema and restaurants.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of results of the survey and how it might differ from their country

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Have students look at the pictures from workbook. Pictures are showing people doing various leisure activities: running, skiing, playing in a band, etc. 1 min. T-Ss - ask students what activities do you see? Which of these things do you enjoy? What else do you do in your free time? Elicit responses by nominating Ss if no one volunteers answers - 3 min.

Pre-Reading/Listening - Pre teach blocking lexis (6-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Bring up slide with 4 challenging words (Survey, musical instruments, nowadays, leisure) - 1 min. Show Ss jamboard activity - send link via chat. Show students an example of the simple matching (sticky note to the definition they think is right) and have them work on this in groups in the BOR - 2 min. *match the sticky note to the correct definition. Work in groups in the BOR, you have 2 minutes* 3 BOR- each group can work on their own slide. Bring Ss back into main room, and review answers, MFP using slides - 3 min.

While- Reading/Listening #1 (8-9 minutes) • To provide students with a less challenging gist listening task

T- Ss - Bring up slide with 3 possible titles for main idea of audio clip. Have Ss read slide about a minute. Have them listen to audio clip and ask them to listen for the main idea of the clip. - 3 min *Review these 3 titles. When you listen to the audio, try to listen for the main idea* Ss-Ss - BOR for Ss to discuss their thoughts on the main idea of the audio. - 3 min *In the BOR, talk about what you think the main idea is between these 3 sentences. You have 3 minutes* Ss-T - Bring Ss back into main room and conduct OCFB on main idea of audio. - 2 min

While-Reading/Listening #2 (10-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference listening tasks

T- Ss - Share Google Form via chatbox - for ex. 2 and have Ss listen to audio clip and ask them to listen for the specific details of the clip. - 3 min *I sent a link to google forms multiple choice via chat. Please confirm you have received, and take a look. Listen to the audio and try to fill out the questions while you listen* Ss-Ss - Create BOR for Ss to check their answers, and discuss the audio - 4 min T monitors the BOR to see if audio needs to be replayed. *You will go back to BOR, and talk about your answers. You will have 4 minutes* Ss- T - Ss return for OCFB. replay audio if necessary, and review Ss answers. Nominate Ss as needed. - 3 min

Post-Reading/Listening (9-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T-Ss - Keep slide with survey answers up (%s etc.) and ask *according to the survey, which activities were the most and least popular? Which results are surprising/different from your country?* - 1 min Split up Ss into BOR and have them discuss ex. 3 - send questions in chat box (most and least popular & surprising/different from your country?) - 5 min ICQ: are we talking to each other or reading? Ss-T - bring Ss back to main room and feedback. Nominate Ss to speak and elicit feedback. - 3 min

Delayed Error Correction (3-4 minutes) • To provide students with a review and corrections

During BOR monitoring, T will note any incorrect phrases or pronunciation. If there is sufficient time at the end of the lesson, T will note 2-3 phrases on a slide and have Ss discuss if they think it is correct or what might be incorrect about them. - 4 min
