Description

In this lesson students will practise the alphabet. They will then have the chance to use their knowledge to spell names. They will also be introduced to simple questions relating to personal information.

Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, students will be better able to use the alphabet and ask simple questions about personal information.

Subsidiary Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, students will have practised listening for gist and specific information in the context of an application form completion dialogue.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To introduce students to the topic of the lesson.

Teacher introduces himself and projects the sentences on the board. He asks the students to help him complete the missing words. Students then work in pairs to introduce themselves. Teacher monitors.

Listening #1 (3-5 minutes) • For students to practise listening for gist in the context of introductions in various contexts.

Teacher shows handout and indicates that there are four dialogues. Students have to listen and match the dialogues with the pictures. Students check in pairs while teacher monitors. Teacher plays again if necessary. Whole class feedback.

Formal vs Informal (2-3 minutes) • To highlight the difference between formal and informal speech in the context of introductions.

Teacher ask students to unfold the first part of the handout and highlights the first example. Students work in pairs to complete the table. W/C F/B.

Mingle (7-10 minutes) • To give Ss opportunity to practise their newly acquired language.

Teacher asks students to unfold the final part of the handout. Teacher indicates the dialogue and demonstrates with a strong student. Students are then asked to stand up and introduce themselves to 5 other students in the room. Teacher monitors. Teacher gives F/B by asking students to give the name of other students in the class by asking the question "who's he/she?".

Alphabet practice (4-5 minutes) • To give students the opportunity to revise/practice the alphabet

Teacher displays the alphabet on the board and drills the letters. Teacher then remains silent while drilling in order. Teacher then switches order.

Number practice (3-5 minutes) • To give students the opportunity to practice/revise the numbers from 1-20.

Teacher plays listening and asks Ss to follow the numbers. Teacher plays audio a second time and asks Ss to listen and repeat. Teacher then highlights and drills troublesome numbers.

Listening #2 (4-5 minutes) • To give students the opportunity to practise listening for specific information in the context of an application form.

Teacher shows Ss H/O#2 and highlights the missing information. Teacher informs Ss they will listen to an audio and try to complete the missing information. Teacher plays audio. Students check in pairs. Teacher monitors. Teacher plays audio again if necessary. W/C F/B

Listening #3 (3-5 minutes) • To give Ss the opportunity to practise listening for specific information in the context of asking for personal information.

T asks Ss to unfold the H/O to highlight the questions asked in the audio. T asks Ss to listen to the audio and complete the missing words. Pair check. W/C F/B and T drill questions.

Freer practice (5-7 minutes) • To give Ss the opportunity to use their newly acquired language in a freer context.

Teacher highlights H/O#3 and indicates that Ss will need to ask and answer questions with their partners to complete the missing information. Teacher monitors and provides delayed F/B if necessary.
