In this lesson ss will recap and practice questions forms in present and past to / be and simple past (do / does / did). In the context of family and friends.

Main Aims

  • To provide review of question forms in the present and past (to be / do / does / did) and give controlled and semi controlled practice in the context of family and friends.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy and fluency speaking practice using question forms in context of family and friends.
  • To provide detailed reading about a friend of Caroline.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T defines a member of the family from the previous lesson - ss guess answer. SS work in pairs / small groups and define family members for other to guess.

exposure to TL (4-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language question forms of to be - past and present

T asks ss about their families. How many people are there in your family? Are you married? What is your husband's job? Were you born in Istanbul? Have you got any children? What is your ... name? etc.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Elicit some of the questions back from the ss and highlight them on the board. Where are you from? Is your daughter married? Were you born in Istanbul? How many people are there in your family?

Clarification (5-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Highlight from of the board - - stress at start of Q to be strong pronunciation / after question word weak. Drill as necessary. Pay attention and highlight long / short answers - weak / strong forms. QW + to be + subject o o Where are you from? I'm from Istanbul o o Are you a from Istanbul? Yes, I am / No, I'm not o o how many people are in your family? o o were you born in Afyon?

Controlled Practice (5-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

SS do ex1 - 2 -3 in pairs before WCFB - T - board answers and provide key for ex3 .

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

EX4: Ss work in pairs and ask and answer questions from EX3. Note any mistakes and give delayed feedback.

semi-controlled / freer spoken practice (10-15 minutes) • to give ss an opportunity to freely use the TL in a meaningful context of family

Ss work in pairs and think about a typical family in their country and make notes using Qs in EX5. SS work in groups and describe families to each other.

Feedback and error correction (5-8 minutes) • to highlight any problems and errors and to give ss an opportunity to share

Ask ss to share examples of a typical family with the WC. Board examples of incorrect language use and elicit correct forms.
