Description

In this lesson students will revise and be able to practice the structure "used to" in the context of childhood activities. They will also get to practice reading for detail and speaking towards the end of the lesson.

Main Aims

  • To enable students to better understand and use the structure "used to" to talk about activities they did in the past.

  • To provide practice speaking by talking about past activities/habits.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-T begins the lesson by displaying a question and a list of childhood activities: Which activities from the list did you used to do as a child? Instructions: You will have 2 minutes to discuss with your partner the question displayed ICQs How much time do you have? (2 min) Will you write something or only discuss? (discussion only) -T opens breakout rooms -T elicits from SS

Exposure/Text work (7-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T gives a background story about the text "You will read a text about the childhood of a girl named Karime while living in Canada" T displays the text Instructions You will have 5 minutes to read and fill in the blanks with the words from the box. ICQs How much time do you have? (5 min) Are you only going to read? (and fill the blanks) -When finished, T opens breakout rooms to compare answers and monitors T elicits from SS and corrects if necessary

Language Clarification (8-12 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Meaning T displays 3 sentences and asks CCQs We used to play soccer when we were young. -Did they play soccer? (yes) -Do they still play soccer? (no) Danny used to eat puree when he was a baby. -Did he eat puree? (yes) -Does he still eat puree? (no) He used to climb trees as a kid. -Does he still climb trees? (no) T asks SS to identify were in the timeline did these actions happened Pronunciation and Appropriacy T reads the sentence and asks SS to identify the stressed words then does some drilling T asks: Are these sentence formal or informal? T nominates SS to participate Form T displays the activity Instructions: You will have 5 min to read the sentences and choose the correct structure. ICQs Will you write something? (no) How much time do you have? (5 min) T sends SS the link -T opens breakout rooms to compare answers and monitors T nominates SS to share their answers and corrects if necessary

Controlled Practice (6-7 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T displays the activity Instructions: You will have 4 minutes to complete the sentences using “used to” and choose the appropriate verb from the box. T gives an example -When finished T opens breakout rooms for SS to compare answers and monitors T nominates SS to share their answers and corrects if necessary

Freer Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T displays a slide with instructions for an interview Instructions: You will have 7 minutes to interview each other. You may use the guide displayed. ICQs How much time do you have? (7 min) Will you write or just ask questions? (ask questions) T opens breakout rooms and monitors SS -T nominates SS to participate

Feedback and DEC • To correct content and language mistakes made throughout the lesson

Using the white board, T writes some mistakes made Content feedback -T asks SS if they notice a problem with the language -T asks SS what is the correct structure and writes it on the board General feedback -Teacher corrects the mistakes and does some drilling
