Description

In this lesson, students will watch and understand a video about the air travel revolution. They will practice listening for gist and for detail. Grammar points covered will include comparative and superlative adjectives.

Main Aims

  • To provide students with listening practice on the topic of air travel and to allow them to notice rhetorical questions

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of air travel lexis, including words like safety, extreme, consist of, avoid, cure
  • To provide clarification of word stress and its function in the context of parts of speech

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Discuss the picture on p. 59, as well as questions 1-3. Take notes of Ss ideas on the screen.

Pre-Listening #1 Video (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the listening and make it accessible

1. Ask Ss to work together answering questions 1.1-1.2 and 2.1-2.2. 2. Go over the new words from the glossary. Ask for examples. 3. Notify the Ss that it's now time to watch a short video on the same topic.

While-Listening #1 Video (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with specific information listening tasks

1. Open p. 61 and ask Ss to fill in the blanks in ex. 3 2. Tell the Ss that now we will check their answers 3. Display the pre-opened video along with a Preview window with p. 61 (via "Portion of screen") 4. After the video is over, help Ss check their answers 5. Give instructions for ex. 4

Post-Listening #1 Video (5-10 minutes) • To discuss the contents of the video with Ss

1. Create 2 columns with names of Ss below the questions 2. Ask Ss to take turns answering the questions and providing arguments supporting their views 3. Take notes of their points

Pre-Listening #2 Audio (10-15 minutes) • To prepare and prime students for listening and make it accessible
