Description

In this lesson students will learn how to make phone calls in the practice of functional language. They will start discussing some questions about phone calls; then they will listen to four conversations in order to contextualize the language which will be elicited by the teacher later on. At the end students will use their learning into a role-play to practice.

Main Aims

  • To introduce and provide practice of functional language for making phone calls

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a functional language in the context of making phone calls
  • To provide gist listening practice using a text about functional language in the context of making phone calls

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1. T will greet Ss 2. T will show an image to Ss and ask the following questions: *What can you see on the image? *Who do you think they are talking to? 3. T will show Ss the next slide with the following questions: *How often do you receive or make phone calls *What do you prefer? Phone calls, text messages, or face to face conversations? 4. Ss will discuss those questions in BOR

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

1. T will explain the next activity to Ss: *Ss will listen to an audio of four people on phone calls *While listening (gist) Ss will fill a task on google forms *Ss WON'T send the document 2. T will play the audio and Ss will answer 3. T will make BOR so Ss compare answers (2 min) 4. OCFB

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

1. T will share a google docs with students that includes useful phrases to make or receive phone calls 2. In BOR students will try to fill in the blanks with the correct option *They will write the answers via private message: example: a) Caller *They will have 3 minutes 3. T will check answers with Ss 4. T will cover FPA FORM: *T will share screen in a google forms *As a group Ss will answer the correct structure for each sentence PRONUNCIATION: *Drilling APPROPRIACY: (based on page 132 sb) *T will ask Ss if the sentences are formal, informal or neutral? *T explains the use of 'speaking' while attending a phone call and tell Ss that it is used when answering the phone at work *T explains why it is incorrect to say 'I am' when starting a phone call: we don't say I am because it refers 'to be' as an state like 'I am happy', instead we use 'this is' or 'it's' to identify ourselves at the phone call

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

1. T will explain the next activity to Ss *In pairs at BOR, Ss will fill in two conversations with the correct information *Ss will write their answers on private messages 2. Ss will work on the task for 5 minutes 3. T answers the task with the help of Ss by nominating them

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

1. T will set a role-play activity 2. T will give each a student a letter (A or B) 3. T will share two links with the procedures of each one 4. T will set that they'll start with A being the caller and B being the reveiver and then change roles 5. Ss will practice a conversation in the context set by the teacher *Ss must use the target language for this *5 minutes for each conversation (two conversations in total) 6. T monitors and take notes to provide DEC
