Description

In this lesson students start by talking about TV programs in Mozambique followed by a reading activities then a discussion on what they think about TV programs.

Main Aims

  • By the end of this lesson students will have practised reading for gist in the context of a reading text on TV mania.

Subsidiary Aims

  • 1. By the end of this lesson students will have discussed TV programs in the context of Mozambican television broadcast. 2. The learners will have also practised reading for general understanding

Procedure

Stage 1 (8-10 minutes) • To engage students on the reading topic ahead and prepare them for any TV programme vocabulary they might come across with in the reading text.

Students receive a handout and go through it to see which ones they know and as a class they discuss which ones are shown on Mozambican TV.

Stage 2 (10-15 minutes) • To read the text and do task 2 from page 130

Teacher asks students to open their books on page 130 and elicit comments around the title of the text “Giving up TV” then they read the text do exercise 2. Meanwhile the teacher moves around to make sure students are doing the right task. In pairs students check their answers then a student with the whole class.

Stage 3 (13-15 minutes) • To do task 3 on page 130 to read for gist

Teacher asks students to do task 3. Then moves around to check they are doing the right task. Then teacher leads the correction with the whole class.

Stage 4 (15-20 minutes) • To read for general understanding and discuss with the whole class

Teacher appoints a student to lead task 4, class discussion, but first asks them to check the meaning of the vocabulary in bold in their mini dictionaries and with the whole class discusses the questions randomly. Students read the relevant paragraph as indicated for general understanding and comment.
