Main Aims

  • To provide review, clarification and practice of the Past Simple: Negative and Y/N questions in the context of Google

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide product writing practice of questions in the context of things you did in the past
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in asking and answering questions in the context of things you did in the past

Procedure

Lead-in (4-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Present slide 1 of presentation Give students 2 minutes to prepare ideas Put students' in pairs and send them to breakout rooms for 3 minutes to discuss the questions OCFB - call on a couple students and ask them to share their ideas

Exposure (9-11 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Present slide 2 of presentation give instructions: "Read the article" and "Match the headings to the correct paragraph" - they have 3 minutes ICQ - what do you write? you have 3 minutes, do you read quickly or slowly? OCFB - call on individual students for answers - display correct answers clearly on slide Present slide 3 of presentation give instructions - "read the text again and answer the questions" - they have 5 minutes ICQ - what do you write? you have 5 minutes now, do you read quickly or slowly? OCFB - Call on students for answers and present answer key on slide

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

MEANING: Present slide 4 of presentation Use marker sentence - Search engines weren’t very good CCQ's for meaning - Were search engines good in the past? NO Are search engines good now? YES So… Past Simple: Negative = A negative event that started and finished in the past FORM: Present Slide 5 of presentation use marker sentences - Search engines weren’t very good. They didn’t like each other at first. give students 2 minutes to complete the gap-fill - OCFB - call on weaker students for answers PRONUNCIATION: Present slide 6 of presentation - use both marker sentences Search engines weren’t very good • 7 syllables • Sentence stress – Search, weren’t, good • Explain that were not becomes weren’t (and the t is silent) - connected speech • Drill correct pronunciation They didn’t like each other at first • 9 syllables • Sentence stress – didn’t, like, each, other, first • Explain that did not becomes didn’t (and the t becomes silent) - connected speech • Drill correct pronunciation

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Present slide 7 of presentation Give instructions - "Write "true" for the sentences that are true for you" and "make the other sentences negative" Give example - 1) I got lots of emails yesterday TRUE I didn’t get lots of emails yesterday ICQ's - If I got lots of emails yesterday what do I write? If I didn't get lots of emails yesterday what do I write? Give students 5 minutes to complete the task - 2 minutes to compare answers in breakout rooms OCFB - "if this was not true, what do I write?" for each sentence - call on a different student and get them to produce the Target Language - show correct answer/form next to each sentence on slide

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Present slide 8 of presentation give instruction - "using these sentences, write Y/N questions using "you"" ICQ - example 1 - "how do I make number 1 a Y/N question using "you"?" - reveal example answer give half of the class questions 2-4, the other half questions 5-7 3 minutes to write answers breakout rooms in pairs (3 minutes) - check your answers and then take turns asking each other the questions. Ask students to pay attention to their partners answers as they will be asked about them afterwards. OCFB - call on students from each group and ask for some of their partners' answers. Present slide 9 of presentation - go through and delayed errors of TL or other general mistakes or good language uses
