Main Aims

  • To provide process and product writing practice of a written review on the internet in the context of online shopping

  • To provide speaking practice in a conversation in the context of online shopping

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Set context for the writing and get the Ss working in pairs so that they are engaged with the topic of the writing before they read and write a text. T will do this by sharing Google Slides with Ss and showing them an example. Ss will talk in pairs about an online purchase they recently made.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Give the Ss a model text of how they should write their review. T will give Ss a gist task and ask them to identify the reason for writing as well as how many stars the author gave the review. Ss will compare answers in pairs before OFC

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

T will give Ss some phrases from the text that they could use in writing their reviews. T will check MFPA of phrases.. CCQ's to check meaning: She was known for being somewhat of a clean freak. How clean is she? kind of Is her condition extreme? no Is being “somewhat of a” clean freak a bad thing? not necessarily The jeans he bought were too small in the waist so he had to adjust the fit. Did he like the jeans he bought? no How did they fit? not very good Do you think he returned the jeans? yes She said that she'd had to make a trade-off between her job and her family. Is her home-life and work-life balanced? no Are the two situations equal or unequal? unequal Will she have to make a sacrifice for one or the other? yes Doctors often rely on trial and error to figure out what works for an individual patient. Productive Task(s) (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Ss will spend 5 minutes free-writing as much language as they can. Ss will spend another 5 minutes editing the form and structure of their review. Ss will spend the last 5 minutes exchanging reviews with a peer in breakout rooms.

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

T will do OCF with class about how the writing went. T will show some of the Ss errors and correct them
