Description

In this session, students will practice listening based on an audio about a book writer and his new book. There will be two exercises for gist and detail listening, followed by free speech and feedback.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide specific information and detailed listening practice using a text about a new book in the context of Radio interview

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a informal conversation in the context of current jobs

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T- This activity will help us to know a bit more about each other. I want to know what you do and if you like it or not, if it is an office job or not. Let me start... I am a meeting planner for corporate events such as conventions, team building activities, congress, summits, etc. I like the negotiation process, but not so much being available all the time. Ask 3 students to speak about their jobs.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T- show 2 words, analyse MFP and CCQ: 1) FURNITURE: M- group of chairs, table, desk, sofa, etc. F- uncountable noun P- stress in FUR 2) UNBELIEVABLE: M- something you can't believe, out of the normal, incredible. Can be good or bad. F- Adjective P- Stress LI CCQs: -I see some nice furniture behind you Raul: Is it one piece or many? many - two chairs and 1 table are furnitures or funiture? furniture -If I say: Let me tell you what happened to me yesterday, it was unbelievable! - Did something incredible happen? YES - Is it a formal conversation? NO - Can this happen to anyone, anytime? NO

While-Listening #1 (4-6 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Show the pictures to the students and explain we will hear an interview about Paul's new book called is that a real job? ask them to put pictures A-C in the order he talks about them. Share the link with pictures in the chat Play audio (2:28) Ask SS for answers

While-Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

T: You will listen to the audio again, pay attention because you will have to select true or false to these questions (show the slide with questions) Send the link with the poll before BOR Check your responses in pairs and find the correct version of false sentences. NOTE: monitor if they can respond or we need to play the audio again. SS: respond if sentences are true or false and also say the correct version of false sentences in OCFB

Post-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ask students to think about 2 or 3 dream/nightmare jobs, offer an example (to give them time to think): I would love to be a tennis player, food critic or an interior designer. Would hate to be security or doorman, salesperson in a show store or a doctor. (1 min) Send them to BOR to share their jobs, monitor for DEC (4 min) Students share their jobs with the group (3 min) Finally, show some words or expressions I heard during the practice and show the correct version. (2 to 5 minutes)
