Main Aims

  • To introduce and provide practice of speaking for fluency in the context of personal information

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice with vocabulary in conversations about interests- Happiness (What makes you happy?)

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-T shares a screen with basic questions about personal information. -T gets Ss to ask him the questions and he quickly answers and nominates a few students to ask their peers the same questions on getting to know them better. - T tells Ss that more information is always necessary to know someone and questions around what makes them happy/hobbies or interests can be useful.

Content preparation. (5-5 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through speaking

-T shares screen introducing the word 'Happiness' and asks students who is/isn't happy. -T shares a photos of different people and nominates students to identify if the people in the photos are happy/unhappy and a reason to support their answer. -T shares a screen of three speakers stating what makes them happy and nominates some students to read. -T asks Ss (gets students to ask peers) the same question emphasising that their responses should be streamed down to a few words or a short phrase. -T conducts OCFB on the questions/responses.

Language preparation/Clarification-MAFP (6-8 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

-T informs Ss that they're going to read a conversation between Carlos and Lisa on what makes them happy. -T shares the screen of the conversation and nominates two Ss to read. -T conducts MAFP clarification on the TL Meaning- what makes you happy? CCQs Do you smile or laugh when you are happy? Yes Do you forget about the sad things in your life when you are happy? Yes Do the same things make everyone happy? No Does everyone have something that can make them happy? - T shares screen and conducts clarification on appropriacy, form and phonology(pronunciation)

Productive Task- Speaking (15-20 minutes) • To allow Ss to talk about the TL

-T shares a screen with different statements to agree/disagree on the TL - what make you happy? -T informs Ss they'll discuss on the topics for five minutes and then their partners will be changed and they will continue the discussions. -T gives Ss further instructions on the task and ICQs them to check understanding. -T sends Ss into BORs to and monitors their conversations while noting areas for DEC. -T swap/shuffle participants in different BORs and have them continue discussing the statements. -T closes BORs and conducts OCFB

Feedback and Error Correction (3-5 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

-T opens zoom WB and writes Ss errors in expression during the productive task -T nominates Ss to correct the errors and assists where possible. -T appreciates Ss efforts in practising TL and closes the session.
