Description

This lesson is focused on the students practicing their speaking fluency. The lesson will begin with students thinking about when their favorite holiday and birthdays take place. Then the students will listen to the text and go through MFP stage. They will practice replicating and creating their own speech in the context of planning on a calendar.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide speaking fluency practice in the context of talking about a calendar.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide listening practice using a text about dates important to people in the text in the context of calendars.
  • To provide writing practice of planning in the context of calendars

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ss answer questions on screen: "Do you use a calendar or a planner to organize your events or deadlines?" "Why or why not?" Demo: I use the calendar in my phone for birthdays, events, holidays, and due dates. 2 minutes in BoR Nominate 1 or 2 students to answer

Content Preparation (6-8 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Instructions: You will hear some people talking about dates which are important to them. Listen and write in the dates in the date column. Answer why if you have time. DEMO ICQs: Where do you write in the date? (Date column) Do you have to answer why? (No, only if you have time) Provide listening Students will fill in the dates and do their best to fill in the notes section BoR for 3 minutes OCFB *not all months are filled in*

Useful Language (6-8 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Meaning Students match sentences to images in BoR for 2 minutes CCQs Do we celebrate Valentine's Day more than once a year? (No) Was my friend born on St. Patrick's Day (Yes) Is a wedding anniversary a celebration? (Yes) Form Clarify that the month comes before the day in English CCQs Which is correct: 17th March or March 17th? Pronunciation Practice drilling (especially THs)

Productive Task(s) (18-24 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Instructions: Take 3 minutes to fill in your own calendar using as many of these days as you can: ICQs: do you have to do all of these? (No) How many do you have to do? (4 or more) DEMO: filling in January (4 min) Instructions: Tell your partner about your personal calendar. DEMO: using TL explain a part of my calendar (8 min) Instructions: Ask your partner questions about their calendar DEMO: have a student ask me a question about my calendar (10 min)

Feedback and Error Correction (6-8 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language
