Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of the first conditional in the context of visiting famous places

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a dialogue in the context of daily problems using the first conditional

Procedure

Warmer (3-4 minutes) • to have some fun and activate the students

I will start by a game designed in the PPT. The game contains numbers and pictures. The pictures are about famous places around the world. Once I click on a number, a picture appears. I will ask a student in a time to choose a number, then I will show them the picture related to the number. The student should say the name of the place and where it is. I will give the students feedbacks about their answers.

Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will give the students a questions hand out about the present simple and the future simple. It is a multiple choice exercise. The students will work in groups to do the exercise. I will ask them some CCQs to check their understanding. -What Type of exercise are you going to do? Multiple choice. -Are you going to work individually or in groups? In groups. -How long is the exercise? 3 minutes. Finally, I will give a whole class feedback. The hand out questions: 1. I usually (goes - go - going- went) to school by bus. 2. I will show the students a name os a city and a picture of a place in that city. Then i will help the students to elicit a sentence using the first conditional following the structure (If you go to......,you will see the .........) The cities and the places: London - The Big Ben Paris - The Eiffel Tower Giza - The Pyramids New York - The Statue of Liberty Rome - The coliseum

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will clarify the meaning of the first conditional to the students; which is that we use it to talk about possible things in the future; by using some eliciting questions: Do these sentences talk about the present or the future? the future. Do the if clause talk about things that are possible or certain? possible. Then I will clarify the form of the first conditional; which is if + present simple, future simple; also using eliciting questions: Which verb form is in the if clause? present simple. Which verb form is in the main clause? future simple. Is the if clause always first in the sentence? no, we can replace it with the main clause. Finally I will clarify the pronunciation of the first conditional sentences. I will tell the student that when we start with the if clause, we say it using raising intonation the falling intonation on the main clause. Also i will tell them that the stress is on the main clause and I will ask the o practice saying some sentences again to make sure they can say right.

Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

I will give the students a controlled practice exercise to make sure they understand the form correctly. i will give then a gap filling exercise. They will work in pairs to do the exercise.
