Description

In this lesson, the students will practice scanning for some specific information about the people in the context of a text, including two paragraphs about " Competition Winners and Losers " and will learn how to use adjectives with very, really, quite and too.

Main Aims

  • Helping the students practice skimming and scanning in the context of a text about the competition winners and losers enhance their reading skills.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Introducing the students various adjectives and helping them how to use these adjectives with some adverbs of degree " very, really, quite and too " in the context of a text, which is about the competition winners and losers...

Procedure

Warm-up / Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • Setting the lesson context and engage the students in the activities.

- The teacher will ask some questions to the students about what they did at the weekend and will get the students to talk about their weekend since they learned how use " the past simple and the simple past " in their previous lesson.

Pre - Reading Stage (5-7 minutes) • Preparing the students for the text and making it much more understandable for the student through teaching a couple of new adjectives with too, very, really and quite ( the blocking vocabulary ).

1- The teacher will put some pictures on the board to teach the adverbs of degree to the students and will give a piece of paper to the students, including a few of sentences which describe the objects in the pictures. 2- Then, the teacher will get the students to stand up and have them match the examples to the appropriate pictures. 3- For feedback, the teacher will check the answers with the whole class.

While - Reading (12-25 minutes) • To practice skimming and scanning in the context of an article, which is about two people who had very different experiences.

1- The teacher will give a piece of paper, including the reading passage to the students and will get them to read it very quickly ( skimming ) to get some general ideas what the texts are about. ( The teacher will give 3 minutes to the students for this part ). 2- After the skimming part, the teacher will give a piece of paper to the students, including 6 questions. Later, the teacher will get the students to work in pairs and will give a name to each student such as A and B. And then, the teacher will tell the students that the students A will read the first text about Jim and the students B will read the second text about Sandra.Finally, the teacher will tell the students (after reading the texts ) to answer the given questions. To do this, the students will read the texts very carefully ( scanning ) to get some specific answers to the questions. ( The teacher will give 10 minutes ( approximately ) to the students for this part ). 3- After the scanning part, the teacher will get the students to work with their partners and ask the questions. The students A, ask about Sandra. The students B, ask about Jim. 4- Then, the teacher will get the students to read the texts again in pairs and have them make a list of the adjectives to understand how they are used with the adverbs of degree in the texts. 5- As a last activity of the while-reading stage, the teacher will give a piece of paper to the students, including 8 sentences which were made up using the adverbs of degree. In that situation, the students will choose the correct words for this activity.

Post - Reading (3-5 minutes) • Enhancing the productive skills ( writing ) of the students, having them use some adjectives with too, very, really and quite to make some sentences about a place in their town or city.

- At the post reading stage, the teacher will give a piece of paper to the students, including 6 incomplete sentences made up using the adverbs of degree. The teacher will ask the students to complete these sentences individually writing the name of a place in their town or city that is : 1- too expensive or quite cheap 2- really beautiful or really ugly 3- very dirty or very clean 4- really boring or really interesting 5- too noisy or very quiet 6- very friendly or very unfriendly.

Back-Up Activity (3-5 minutes) • Back-Up Activity To convey the meaning of the adverbs of degree.

1- The teacher will have the students work in groups and compare places. The teacher will ask them " do you know any of places the students talk about ? if yes, do you agree ? "...
