Description

In this lesson, students will learn about the use of the passive voice through guided discovery based on a reading text about "movies". The lesson starts with a lead in to put tenses and vocabulary in context. This is followed by some questions where students have to discuss so then they can focus on the content of the lesson and finally closing the class by letting them practice TL and so the T can provide OCFB.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To introduce and practice Passive Form in various context of learners daily life.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Students practice speaking during freer practice in the context of their daily basis using target vocabulary and tenses.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T greets students then shows some visuals for them to guess the topic of the lesson, T asks "What do you think the lesson is going to be about?" once they brainstorm, T will tell Ss to discuss two questions: - 1.- What’s your favorite movie? Why? - 2.- Do you prefer foreign films to be subtitled or dubbed? Then T examplifies how they can answer each question providing also key vocabulary for students to later do an activity based in this activity. Ss will use breakout rooms for 3 minutes to discuss about the questions.

Exposure/Text work (10-12 minutes) • To draw students attention to the TL through a short text or situation

T shows Ss the reading by sharing the screen, then tells them to skim through the text and pay close attention to the colored sentences and its context, they will have 5 minutes for this. Then Ss will discuss what they think they mean. Once they are done, T provides guiding questions for them to have a clearer view of what they should cover: 1- What tenses can you identify? 2- Do you notice any pattern? Ss will share their guessings in breakout rooms for 3 minutes. T monitors and takes notes for further feedback.

MFP Clarification (10-12 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the TL

T displays a slide with a google forms link then shows students by sharing in the screen the questions they have to answer. T shares the link through the chat box and let students guess the meaning of four sentences. Then checks them with the class. T shows the next slides to cover form and pronunciation, also provides examples for students to see how they look in context.

Controlled practice (14-16 minutes) • To check understanding of the content seen and prepare students for more significant practice

T tells Ss to answer on google slides then give each Ss a section for them to answer individually. once they are finished, they will share their answers in breakout rooms. Then T will check as a whole class to deliver OCFB.

Freer practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students the opportunity to practice the target language by discussing in pairs/teams

Ss will discuss in breakout rooms for 5 minute. They will be asked to change some sentences in active voice to passive voice: 1- We are going to watch a movie tonight. 2- Mom read the novel in one day. 3- I will clean the house every Saturday. 4- Tom painted the entire house. 5- The teacher always answers the students' questions. The wedding planner is making all the reservations. 6- The science class viewed the comet. 7- Someone has cleaned the windows. 8- I have kept all your old letters. They will share orally what they think the correct passive voice structure is. After the activity, T will provide feedback.
