'Used To'

Description

In this lesson, students will learn how to use 'Used To' to talk about past routines and habits. First, the TL will be contextualised by showing a picture of an old man. Students will be prompted to discuss his life now and in the past. The structure 'Used To' will be introduced in this stage. They will then practice the meaning, and through guided discovery will identify its different forms (affirmative, negative, interrogative). They will then practice the TL through controlled practice, later moving to freer practice.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Picture of an old man- elicit information about the man's life now and in the past.

Exposure (2-3 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a situation

TL will be introduced and students will be asked Concept Checking Questions for meaning.

Highlighting (1-2 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Students will be shown a diagram to further highlight the meaning of the TL

Clarification (5-6 minutes) • To clarify the meaning of the target language

Students will practise meaning through an individual matching exercise. They will compare answers and then finish with eliciting the correct answers in open class.

Clarification (7-8 minutes) • To clarify the form of the TL

Students will analyse the sentences in the Practise Meaning exercise, and through guided discovery find the affirmative, negative and interrogative forms of the TL. There will then be open class feedback.

Controlled Practice of Form (6-7 minutes) • Students practise conjugating the form of the TL

Students will complete sentences with the correct form of the verbs in brackets, compare and then check answers in open class.

Controlled Practice of Pronunciation (4-5 minutes) • To clarify and drill correct pronunciation

Students identify elements of connected speech when using the TL. They're asked to identify the individual sounds /s/ or /z/, and the elision of /d/ and /t/ The connected speech will then be drilled and individual students will be asked to practise.

Semi-Controlled Practice of the TL (5-6 minutes) • To practise making sentences using the TL

Students watch a short video comparing life in the past and life today. They try to say 2 things people used to do and 2 things they didn't use to do. Share ideas in open class! Write on the WB.

Freer Practice (10-12 minutes) • Students will use the TL through a Speaking Activity
