Description

In this lesson, students practise vocabulary about leisure time activities in the context of holiday. They will match the words with the pictures, drill the target vocabulary, read a text including the words and play a mimng game.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of leisure time activities in the context of holiday

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about leisure time activities in the context of holiday

Procedure

Lead-in - Hangman (0-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T asks ss to tell some letters to write in blanks and they try to guess the context of the lesson.

Introduction to the TL (0-1 minutes) • To elicit one example of lexis

T shows the picture of cards to the ss and tries to elicit the word. Then she sticks the picture on the WB.

Conveying the meaning (0-5 minutes) • To provide clarification of the meaning of TL

T shows the leisure time activity pictures to the ss and try to elicit the words. After showing each picture, she sticks them on the board.

Drilling (0-5 minutes) • To convey ss to correct pronunciaton of the TL by using choral and individual drilling

T points at the pictures on the WB and drills the vocabulary chorally and individually. Also a student who is good at pronouncing the words is invited and the class repeats after that student.

Matching activity (0-5 minutes) • To introduce ss to the form of the TL

Ss are given a matching activity and do it individually. After finishing, they check the answers in pairs.

Putting the words on the board (0-3 minutes) • To make the form visible and prepare students for the next stage

Ss are given the vocabulary flashcards to put them up on the WB. Then they check the board if there is a mistake.

The collocations of leisure time activities (0-5 minutes) • To elicit collocations of leisure time activities

T elicits from ss which activity goes with which verbs and underlines ''-ing'' to highlight that the verb ''go'' comes before the activities end with -ing'. Then T sticks the flashcards ''GO'' and ''PLAY'' above the appropriate group of activities and ask CCQs to check ss' understanding.

Pre - reading (0-3 minutes) • To introduce ss to the sentence frame by using the characters from the text which will they read in the next stage

T puts the pictures of Roger and John on the board and writes their names below. T asks ss ''What does John / Roger do on holiday? '' and she shows an activity at the same time. T writes '' John plays cards on holiday. '' as a model sentence.

Reading activity (0-5 minutes) • To provide ss practise gist reading a text including TL

Ss are given a text about John and Roger's holidays, read it and find out which one is a summer / winter holiday. Ss check their answers in pairs.

Miming game (0-7 minutes) • To enable ss to practise speaking for fluency in TL

Ss are divided into two or three groups. Each group has a set of cards including pictures. One student from each group picks a card and mime the activitiy and other ss in the group try to guess which activity is it. When they find out the activity, a they note it down like '' Elif goes windsurfing.'' The group who finishes first win the game.

Error-focused feedback (0-3 minutes) • To give ss an opportunity to correct their mistakes

T writes the mistakes made by ss during the miming game and draws ss' attention on them and asks for correction.
