Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice by describing favorite movies.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

After greeting, the teacher asks students whether they like movies or not. If they like movies, they will talk briefly about their favorite movies or the movies they have watched recently.

Exposure (10-12 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through pictures

(The whole class sit in a circle) The teacher shows 10 posters to elicit genres of movies. When any student guesses the genre of the movie correctly, it will be written on the board. Then the teacher wants students to describe each genre and writes the adjectives or sentences that best describe it. Genres of movies are: sci-fi, sad, war, comedy, documentary, anime, animated-film, horror, drama, and thriller Adjectives and vocabularies best describe or are related to different genres are: aliens, robots, tear-jerker, hilarious, ridiculous, reality, animation character, scray, mysterious, unhappy The teacher practice parts of speech and pronunciations after writing each word on the board. The difference between thriller and horror movie should be explained.

Controlled Practice (10-15 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

(The students change their seats in smaller circles depending on their partners' locations.) Now, students in pairs or groups of three talk about their favorite genres of movies with examples and tell the reasons why they like them by using adjectives. (They have time for 5 minutes but it may last to 7 minutes.) The teacher monitors students and helps them if they need it while they are discussing. After that, one by one, they stand in the middle of the class and talk about their favorite genres in front of the whole class briefly with a reason.

Clarification (5-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

The students will watch a video about genres of movies with clear examples and important elements that specialized each genre.

Task/Practice (10-15 minutes) • To concept check further

There are 10 short paragraphs that describe different genres. (There is no problematic word or phrase in paragraphs to confuse them.) Students have to read them and fill the gaps by using the genres in the box in 5-7 minutes. After that, the teacher reads paragraphs, and students should say the genre together loudly and check their answers.
