Description

In this lesson, Ss will practice speaking in the context of a hypothetical scenario (what would they do if they were trapped on a deserted island) while using the present subjunctive mood and the 2nd conditional mood. By the end of the lesson the Ss should feel comfortable deciding when to use the subjunctive and the conditional moods, and effectively implement them while speaking about hypothetical situations. Students will improve their conversational skills first and foremost.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide speaking practice in a conversation in the context of Hypothetical scenarios

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of Present subjunctive and conditional together in the context of Being trapped on a desert island

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ss will be asked the question, "What would you do if you were trapped on a deserted island?" Ss will talk in pairs T will monitor SS in BOR's

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Ss will be presented with a short text, a scenario in which someone is trapped on an island and what they would do.

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

T will highlight useful vocabulary for Ss to use during the productive tasks. T will elicit meanings from Ss Ss will exhibit understanding and practice the new language

Productive Task(s) (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

T will present desert-island scenario to SS Ss will work in pairs to come up with 5 things they would bring with them on a desert island. Ss will switch pairs and talk with another Ss about the scenario During OCF, whole class will decide on 5 items.

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Teacher will conduct feedback on the productive skills tasks T will share with the Ss errors they made during the class Ss will work in pairs to discuss the errors OCF
