Main Aims

  • To provide a gist, scan and detailed reading practice using a text about life after Covid-19

Subsidiary Aims

  • To reinforce students’ comprehension skills through speaking.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-Start the lesson with a compilation of funny songs about Covid-19 to grab the students' attention. (1:24 minutes) -Classroom seating: u-shape Time: 9:00 - 9:03

Pre-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

- Show the students different pictures about life before and after Covid-19. ( gist question) -Ask them what do they predict the reading text to be about? ( gist question) -Ask the students the vocabulary words that they can elicit from the pictures that are related to the topic. ( gist question) - pre-teach the difficult vocabulary words in the text: (unprecedented): adj means never known before (Spatial): adj means occupying space ( frivolous) : adj means of little importance -Teacher's role: instructor Time: 9:03 - 9:15

While-Reading #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist, predict, and discussion reading tasks

-Give the students the text without the title and subtitles. -Ask them to skim the text and elicit the title of it. (2-3 minutes) -Ask about the genre of the text. -Ask about the main idea of the text and how is it related to the pictures. -Pair check: Students will check each other's titles and discuss why they chose it. Then a whole class feedback. -Show the students the text with the title. -Acknowledge the student who wrote the closest one to it. -Class seating: U-shape -Teacher's role: instructor and observer -Time: 9:15 - 9:25

While-Reading #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

-The student apply intensive reading through the text. (4-6 minutes) -The students elicit subtitles from reading each paragraph with the help of the pictures above them. (2 minutes) - Students answer the worksheet (6 detailed questions). (4 minutes) -Peer check: The students will check each other's answers. Then a whole class feedback. (2 minutes) -Teacher's role: observer -Time: 9:25 - 9:41

Post-Reading #1 (6-7 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

-Students will practice speaking skill by telling one personal experience about their life before and after Covid-19. - Students will use past and present tense during speaking activity. -Teacher's role: observer -Time: 9:41 - 9:48

Post-Reading #2 (2-4 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to practice the new vocabulary from the text

-Teacher distributes vocabulary worksheets. (match with the correct definition). -Students answer the work sheet. (individual activity) -After they finish, answer it on the board and they check their answers. -Teacher's role: observer and assessor -Time: 9:48 - 9:52

Post-Reading #3 (4-5 minutes) • To provide the students with an opportunity to practice writing and summarizing.

-Students summarize each paragraph in one sentence. (sub skill) -Quick feedback for the whole class. Teacher's role: observer Time: 9:52 - 9:57

CCQ and wrap-up (1-2 minutes) • To concept check the comprehension of the text

-Ask some questions to wrap up the session. * Is our life the same before and after the pandemic? *Did our health get affected with the virus? *Do you prefer the life routine before or after Covid-19? Teacher's role: instructor Time:9:57- 9:59

Assignment

-Read any story of your choice and answer in your copybook some questions: Who is the author? Is the story fictional or non-fictional? What is the main idea of the story? Who are the characters?
