Description

In this lesson, Ss learn the meaning conveyed by second and third conditional sentences.Ss learn to use second and third conditional sentences, wish and if only to express an unreal situation in the past, present or future. Then Ss practice speaking in the context of wishes and regrets by using the specific grammatical structures.

Main Aims

  • For learners to learn the concept of conditional sentences second and third, wish, and if only in the context of wishes and regrets

Subsidiary Aims

  • For learners to practice speaking to express unreality in the context of wishes and regrets

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-T shows Ss images and asks them what they can see and what they think the wish or regret is in each situation, T elicits a range of answers, assesses how accurately students express the regrets or wishes but does not feedback on Ss. -T asks Ss to listen to five short conversations in a different order from photos A-E. -T asks Ss to compare their ideas and number the photos in the order they hear them -Ss listen, T monitors -T checks the answers and asks Ss if they can remember what people wish or regret

Test #1 (8-10 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

-T asks Ss to fill in the gaps by using the verb in the bracket on their own -Ss do the exercise, T monitors -T asks Ss to tell the answer of each question and shows the answer key

Teach (8-10 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

-T asks Ss to look at sentences -T asks Ss to tell which sentences are about present time and which are about the past time -T shows the answer key and clarifies expressing unreality by shift tense -T shows Ss examples and elicits ideas about the form and meaning of them -T asks Ss what the full form of contractions I'd, you'd and we'd are (in sentences c,d,f) -T drills the pronunciation of the words in the previous stage -T makes an example to clarify the fact between the sentence a -T asks Ss to do the exercise on their own (what are the facts behind each sentence) -Ss do the exercise, T monitors -T puts Ss into groups to check their answers -Ss check their answers, T monitors -T shows the answer key and explain more if they need

Test #2 (8-10 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

-T asks Ss to express a wish about the facts from 1-12 by using the world in the bracket on their own -T does number one as an example -Ss answer the questions, T monitors -T puts Ss into groups to check their answers -Ss check their answers, T monitors -T shows the answer key and explain if Ss need

Free practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with speaking practice

-T writes a question on the board and asks Ss to discuss it in groups -T puts Ss into groups -Ss discuss the question, T monitors and writes down any common errors -T gets feedback from Ss -T highlights any common errors.
