Description

In this lesson, students will undergo practice listening for gist and listening for details techniques in the context of jobs. The lesson will start with a discussion about jobs that learners would really hate and will share their ideas in groups. They will be given feedback in class by the teacher. This will be the first stage and then students lead into the listening text to practice the context of jobs in details.

Main Aims

  • Students will be better able to listen for gist and for details through the context of "Job Titles" and "I hate my Job".

Subsidiary Aims

  • Students will be introduced to some vocabulary items in the context of jobs. To provide fluency speaking practice in a group discussion in the context of jobs.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T commences the class by showing some pictures of individuals working in their offices to set the context of jobs. T tries to elicit some views from the learners individually about the pictures shown.

Pre-Listening (4-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T introduces the topic and elicit learner's vision on jobs that they really hate and make them work in pairs to discuss. T sets a time limit: 3 minutes T monitors students. FB is given for each group.

While-Listening #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening tasks

T introduces the task before giving the HO. SS sits in pairs and answers the questions. T monitors SS. SS check their answer with a partner. FB is given and answer is put on the WB.

While-Listening #2 (15-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference listening tasks

T introduces the next exercise and explains the activity. T gives SS some pictures which they should arrange in order by listening to the recording. SS check their answers in pairs. T provides FB. SS listen to the recording again to note down reasons why barry dislikes his job. ICQs SS work in pairs. SS check their answers with a partner. FB is provided in WB.

Post-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T asks SS to think of some advice to give Barry. SS work in groups to construct two or three suggestions. FB is given by T. T regroups students for the next discussion activity. T asks SS to discuss their job troubles in pairs and asks their partners to give advises.

Delayed Error feedback (1-2 minutes) • For SS to notice their own mistakes and get feedback.

T puts SS' errors on the WB and correct the form/pronunciation. T thanks the class. Goodbye.
