Description

In this lesson , students will be reading a story about travelers in the jungle and their adventures, then they will answer some questions about the story and the next part of the lesson will be focused on a few listening tasks. Students will also have speaking practice during different stages of the lesson and at the end of the lesson .

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading and listening practice using a text about The Amazon forest in the context of lost in the jungle

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of lost in the jungle

Procedure

Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- Greet Ss - Show the Ss a picture to elicit the topic from them -Lost in The Jungle- - Stick questions 1+2 P.46 onto the whiteboard and let them speak in pairs/groups answering these questions

Pre-Reading (2-3 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

- Show the Ss the title of the text with the pictures projected on the whiteboard and have them give some predictions about the content and the main idea of the story - Listen to their ideas and don't share the answer with them

While-Reading #1 (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with a less challenging gist reading task and to pre-teach some vocabulary that might be unknown by Ss

- Give Ss the hand-outs / HO1/ which has the story and the questions - Tell them that they will read the text quickly just to check if they have had correct predictions about the text and ask ICQs to make sure they don't take too long to read the text - Listen to their answers about the main idea of the text - Ask them after they finish if they have seen any difficult words - Give them a hand-out /HO2/ which has definitions exercise of some vocabulary in the text and in the listening tasks that they will have later - Ask CCQs if needed for some words

While-Reading #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

- Ask Ss to read the story deeply again to answer questions 1+2+3 - Monitor and help if needed - Tell them to check in pairs/groups - Give them the answer key /HO3/ -which will be at the back of the paper- and ask them few questions to see if they understand the story - Take oral answers from whole class for questions 4+5

While-Listening #1-6 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with detailed listening tasks

- Tell Ss that we will have a few listening tasks and after each one they will answer the questions orally in pairs before they check their answers - Give Ss the script /HO4/ of the listening tasks and tell them they can check their answers after they finish each task - Ask some questions after each task to check their understanding - Probably not all the tasks will be done since time is not enough so the pace will be determined according to Ss' comprehension speed of answering questions

Productive Follow-Up Activity (4-4 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

- Ask Ss to answer ex.d P.47 in pairs/groups - Monitor and take notes if possible - Give whole class feedback
