In this lesson students will have speaking activities that would be controlled or semi-controlled and would involve the introduced vocabulary. Also, students will practice speaking for accuracy and using the new vocabulary correctly

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of collocations in the context of human relations


Lead - in (2-3 minutes) • To set the lesson context and provide some speaking practice

ON WB 4 words: advice, mistake, opinion,effort --- all nouns Please look at these 4 words. You will watch a video now. Watch and make notes how the conversation in this video is related to these words. for example: If you hear this "you should buy this car!" Which of these words will you choose? ICQ: Will you try to hear these 4 words in conversation? No will you take notes ? yes PW - discuss and check info WCFB - listen to Ss opinions, try to elicit 4 collocations

Test 1 (2-3 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

HO1 we have 7 nouns and 3 verbs. decide which verb is the best "man" for the "bride" noun. Sometimes a noun can have two men. PW - check WCFB - Ss write answers on WB

Vocabulary (5-6 minutes) • To introduce the key words (collocations)

Words on WB elicit the meaning of collocations, clarify if needed stress the form - where do we write article /a/ do WC drilling

Test 2 (6-7 minutes) • To check Students understanding of TL

HO2 Each student will be given 4 different words. do not show them to your partner. Student A looks at his first word and tries to explain it for student B. Student B has to guess the word written on the paper For example - "I think you should stop eating so much chocolate" Which collocation is this? Give advice ICQ: will you show your words to your partner? no Will you use the words from the paper while explaining? no T monitors and listens for errors

Semi-controlled speaking activity (7-8 minutes) • To encourage the students to use TL

Students use the same words as for previous activity Your friend tells you a collocation and you have to make a sentence with it. You can use also reported speech. For example: make a mistake ---- my mom told me that I made a huge mistake coming to Turkey. T monitors and listens for errors at the end --- delayed error correction from both activities

semi controlled productive skills activity (15-16 minutes) • To practice TL in speaking

HO4 look at these pictures and create a story using the collocations. ICQ: will you write the story? yes, discuss and write Will you use all the pictures? no, but a lot will you use all 8 collocations? you will try :) S works in groups of 3 T monitors mistakes After they finished, T asks all students to stand up and find a friend to whom he wants to tell his story, His friend will tell him a story too. later all sit down. T asks whose story was the best. S tells the best story T does delayed error correction

if time - Freer speaking (5-7 minutes) • To introduce speaking for fluency
