Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of the times
  • To provide review and practice functional language in the context of "telling the time"

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review of times lexis
  • To provide gist listening practice about the time lexis.

Procedure

Lead-In (3-5 minutes) • To give sts an introduction about time lexis.

I will show the photo of a watch, ask sts to think about the time at the moment. I will start by asking : Who is going to tell me the time? What time is it at the moment?

Elicit the lexis (15-20 minutes) • To introduce sts to the times

I will heavily use the photos of clocks, and will use an actual clock if necessary. I gradually explain the meanings of "hour", "minute", "past", "to", "am", "pm" "quarter". I will ask sts to fill the follow-up activities which are designed for each part. I will start by sticking 2.picture to the WB, and ask them about hours. Then, I will talk about "one, two, three" hours and usage of "at" and "o`clock" . I will say : We usually use "o`clock " after telling the time. And before telling the time we use "at". Stress is on the "clock". Now, let`s have a look at the meaning of "am" and "pm". So who knows "am or pm"? "am" means between midnight and midday. So it starts 12 o`clock night time and finish at 12 o`clock lunch time. "am" and "pm" come from two first letters of .......(from the WB). Hand out Activity 1. Stick to the WB "minutes photo" : "Sometimes when we talk about the times we have to use the minutes. It does not make sense if we only use the hours. As you can see we have the minutes around the clock. It starts with 5.10 and goes up to 55" Stick to the WB "clock arms picture" : "We use the short and long arms for hours and minutes. Short one is for hour, and long one is for minutes". Stick to the WB "past 5 minutes picture : if the long arm goes past 12 we have to use "past". For example here time is ...." Stick to the WB " a quarter past picture : if you look at this photo it looks like a cake which has 4 pieces. And one piece of it has been eaten. That means "a quarter". It means 15 minutes when we talk about times". Stick to WB " half an hour picture : Now, let`s think about the cake again. This time, half of the cake has been eaten. This time, we call this "half". Stick to the WB "past activity" and do it with the class. Hand out the Activity 2 and let them do it on their own (no pairs). Check the answer WC Stick to the board " TO photo" : "Sometimes we have to say the time after half past when it comes to the thirty and goes past it. So, the long arm goes towards twelve. If you look at here long arm is on the four which means you still have 20 minutes to go 4. Do the exercises with WC. Hand out the activity 3. Check the answers (sts do it on their own) Stick to the board "What is the time in English photo" : "You can have a look at this photo to understand the time lexis properly and it is a summary of what we have done today".

Drill the time lexis (3-5 minutes) • Explicit the stress

Drill the stresses on the "It is at a quarter past one" and "It is at half past eleven".

Listening (5-10 minutes) • To practice their receptive skills

Sts will listen to the recording on the page 53, activity 1.96. They will listen and repeat telling the time.

Personalize lexis (10-15 minutes) • Practice their productive skills

I will remove the pictures from the WB. I will hand out activity 4 and ask sts to work with their partners. This activity is related to my usual morning and what I do at the specific times. They will see the times on the sheet, have to guess and write the correct times to fill in the blanks. They will find out what has been earlier taught in this lesson. I will hand out activity 5 to do it with their partner. This time, sts will ask some specific questions to their partners and write the answers on the sheets. This time, sts wil practise speaking skills and get some specific time related answers. If there is time I will hand out last activity. if not, I will hand out it anyway to be done at home. If there is time, I will show the local times around the world on my i-pad.
