Will Will

TP 7
Pre Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, students learn how to write a short movie review in the form of an email. SS will be exposed to LP with a lead-in that discusses if they like movie reviews. SS will then read an example movie review written by TT and identify the segments it is made up of. SS will then review TL by analyzing the language from the review example and do a mini MFP. Once TL is understood, SS will write their own movie review in the form of an email. Afterwards, they partner up and provide feedback with a checklist in BOR's.

Main Aims

  • To introduce and provide practice of writing a (short) online film/book review.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide deduction reading practice using a text about movie reviews in the context of an email to a friend.

Procedure

/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

SS will be engaged with LP with a picture and the following two questions: Do you like to read movie reviews? Do you prefer to read before or after the movie? SS will engage in discussion in pairs through BOR's. TT will elicit feedback from ss.

Text analysis (9-10 minutes) • To show ss to my writing example and expose them to TL and MFP.

SS will have five minutes to read a short movie review written by TT. SS will then match the correct definition with the following TL: Synopsis: A brief summary of something. The Story: An account of people and events told for entertainment. Recommendation: a suggestion that something is good or suitable for a particular purpose or job SS will then match the correct sections of the example movie review. SS will then match the following target language with the correct definition: Drove: Something has been driven, pushed or moved forward. Takes place: To happen, occur Follows: to move behind someone or something and go where they go AND to have a great interest in something or watch something closely Overall: Taking everything into account TT will point out the multiple meanings of follow. SS will practice saying the following sentences, with less emphasis on pronunciation to save time: Inception takes place in a world where... It drove her insane. Overall, I recommend watching this movie. Inception follows, Cobb, a middle-aged man who... TT will then review fill-in-the-blank CCQ's by eliciting ss responses of the following sentences: Her job______ her crazy. This story ______ a middle-aged man who… ______, I do not recommend watching this movie. This story ______ in a world where… SS will correct each other as needed. TT will do one final round of CCQ's by asking ss if the following sentences are correct or incorrect: Her job drove her happy. Overall, I recommend watching this bad movie. This story takes place in a banana where… The story follows the main character closely. SS will correct each other as needed.

Writing their own email (19-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice productive TL skills

SS will be given the following instructions and given twenty minutes to write in a shared word document. Choose a movie and write a review for a friend in an email. Follow the same format in the example review. Each ss will have a prelabeled section to promote effeciancy. TT will review ss writing throughout the 20 minutes and to provide additional clarify if needed and to make notes for possible DEC if time allows.

Feedback (9-10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to plan students' reports

TT will share a link for a checklist for students to read first. TT will the partner ss to read each others movie review and check if they have completed the checklist. The check list asks the following: Does the email greet their friend? Does the review have a synopsis? Does the review detail the story? Does the review make a recommendation? Is the review convincing? After checklists are completed, they will be placed in breakout rooms to discuss.

OCFB and DEC (1-3 minutes) • To give SS a chance for Open class feedback and if time allows, some DEC

If time allows, TT will ask SS if their were any reviews that convinced them to watch a movie. If not enough time, TT will review DEC based off of student writing/discussion. Time allowing.
