Description

In this lesson students will learn and practice functional language for making promises and making excuses.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of language used for giving reasons and making promises in the context of negociating housechores.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice for fluency when making promises and giving reasons.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will present students with a series of images about different house chores. Students will say if they like doing those or not. Then I will present the context for the day, negotiationg house chores.

Gist Task (2-2 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text

Students will read a short dialogue about two roomates negotiating their house chores.

Intensive Task (3-3 minutes) • To introduce marker sentences upon which to explain MFP

Students will be put in breakout rooms and presented with a text and classify the four sentences between promises and reasons. Instructions: Search for the slide with your room number. Read the text and classify the marked sentences. Are they promises or are they reasons? Move the sticky notes to the correct circle.

Clarification (10-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Use Jamboard to explain target language to students.

Controlled Practice (8-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students will be given an excercise in Slides. Instructions: Use the images in the slide to write two reasons and two promises for not helping your roommate. you have 3 minutes. Write them on your notebook. After working with the images, they will be put in breakout rooms for 3 minutes to compare their answers with their partners before sharing them with the class. ICQs: Do you have to use all images? No Do you need to use the functional language? Yes How many minutes do you have to work on the images? 3 minutes.

Freeer Practice (10-10 minutes) • To provide students practice of the target language in their own speech.

Students will be put in groups of three and given the image of a messy appartment. They have to excuse themselves from doing some tasks and promise to do others in return. They will mark their tasks with a color as they keep on changing. After 6 minutes they will return to the whole class and share their best excuses and some promises.

Feedback (5-5 minutes) • To acknowledge their efforts and revise some common mistakes.

Students will be shown some mistakes in a whiteboard and they will suggest ways to correct them. Afterwards, their progress will be aknowledged.
