Description

In this lesson I am going to introduce useful phrases. Students will listen and read a conversation focusing on asking and giving directions. They will practice listening and fill in the gaps. They will also practice reading to find the specific information. Students will try to write the polite way of asking directions. Then they will practice speaking with their pairs.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information in the context of useful phrases

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of language used for useful phrases in the context of asking and giving directions

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students with speaking

Show the picture on the board. Ask the students "who they are, what they are doing, where they are going." Write the answers on the board and try to create a story about them.

Pre-Reading/Listening (3-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

HO1-Give 3 questions to the students. PW- they will discuss the questions in pairs. WC Feedback- elicit the answers.

While Listening #1 (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist listening tasks

Track- Play the track and students find the answers of the questions. They will listen one time so be sure that they understand the questions by asking CCQs Are they going somewhere? yes Are they looking for a road or street? road Do they pass the same place before? yes how many times? Feedback- students open the folded part and check their answers.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (10-15 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

HO2 Track 31:Give the fill in the blanks task. Students will listen again to fill the gaps with the information in the conversation. if they can not catch the correct information for the first time, let them listen twice. Feedback- HO3 give the students text and they will try to find the missing information from the text. WC feedback- reflect the gaps on the board. They come and fill in the blanks. Track 32-Drilling: students will listen to the correct forms of the sentences and repeat them chorally.

Post-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ask students how they ask for direction. Polite or directly. Elicit the answers. Write where is the nearest bank? on the board. Let them ask it in a polite way. Elicit the answers. HO4-give the students some questions. PW-They will rewrite the questions in less direct language.(politely) Ask ICQs to clarify if they understand your instruction or not. Do you answer those questions? NO Do you change them? Yes How? (Politely) Do you write or speak? Write Can you look at the text? Yes WC feedback: Elicit the answers. If time needed: WC mingle- Students stand up and ask for different directions to their friends one by one and their friends give the direction for those places.

Delayed Error Correction (2-4 minutes) • To provide students the correct use of language.

while the students are on the tasks throughout the lesson T observes them and take notes. Write the wrong use of language on the board. Elicit the correct answers by asking CCQs and let them correct their own mistakes. If it is a pronunciation mistake drill it.
