Description

In this lesson students will learn speaking fluency for ambitions and achievements in the context of greatest achievements. SS will be introduced to the topic through pictures that contextualize the lesson and talking points of "What is something you have always wanted to do?" and "What is something you are proud of doing?" After discussion SS will fill in content sentences with the topic of the their discussion. Then SS will listen to an audio prompt and be asked to fill in the blank for content sentences. Following the audio SS will go through MFP, matching definitions and identifying stress in sentences. The SS will have a guided discussion of naming four dreams/ambitions/achievements and discussing with their partner. A second discussion will follow in larger groups with new partners where students name their ambitions and discuss a few points of topic. Lastly, SS will give each other feedback followed by TT briefly go over delayed error and correction.

Main Aims

  • To introduce and provide practice of speaking for fluency for talking about ambitions and achievements in the context of greatest achievements.

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice with 'in addition to' and about the past.

Procedure

Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

SS will be introduced to the LP through pictures of relatable ambitions and the talking points: "What is something you have always wanted to do?" and "What is something you are proud of doing?" SS will be split into pairs in breakout rooms for two minutes to discuss talking points. SS will share some of their discussion after breakout rooms.

Content Preperation (4-6 minutes) • To provide and highlight useful words and phrases

SS will be called on individually to fill in the blank of the following sentences based on the Lead-in task. One thing I’d like to do one day is _______ It’s always been my dream to _______ I’d also like to _______ One thing I’ve done that I’m very proud of is _______ My greatest achievement was when I _______ Ss will examine another fill in the blank task before listening to an audio clip. (About 1 min) SS will volunteer answers for the fill in the blank sentences based off the audio. TT will ask another student for correct answer if needed.

Language Preparation (8-10 minutes) • To prepare SS with the language for the LP

SS will be asked to match the following phrases with the correct definitions. An ambition - A Dream - An Achievement - Something you want to do one day Something you have done which you are proud of Something you would like to do, but probably won't. TT will elicit responses and ask a different student for correct answer if needed. TT will pronounce the following sentences with correct emphasis and do repetition drills with SS. One thing I’d like to do one day is It’s always been my dream to I’d also like to TT will elicit SS to identify where the emphasis is. TT will pronounce the following sentences with correct emphasis and do repetition drills with SS. One thing I’ve done that I’m very proud of is My greatest achievement was when I TT will elicit SS to identify where the emphasis is. TT will address one possible problem pre-emptively by having SS identify the correct sentence of the following: Which is correct response to this question? What’s another ambition you have? I’d like to catch a big fish one day. OR I’d also like to catch a big fish one day. TT will elicit a different student for correct answers if needed

Guided Speaking task (9-11 minutes) • To provide SS a guided task to practice fluency of LP

SS will be shown the following talking point: Make a list four ambitions/dreams/achievements that you have in your life. They could be connected to any of the following: SS will be review examples to help them identify what they would like discuss, ie: Job, School, Money, Marriage, Place you’d like to visit/live, Something you’d like to own, Children, Someone you’d like to meet, Something you’d like to discover or invent, Something you’ve learned, Something you’d like to learn, Sports. After reviewing task for one minute SS will be split into pairs in breakout rooms for 10 minutes.

Freer Speaking Practice (8-8 minutes) • To allow SS to freely practice fluency of LP

SS will be shown the following task: Tell each other your ambitions: Who has the most unusual ambition? Who has the hardest ambition? Which people have the same ambitions? SS will be placed into breakout rooms in groups of 3-4 to discuss the talking points. TT will move between rooms to discreetly observe.

Feedback (4-6 minutes) • To provide SS with feedback on content and language based on TT monitoring.

TT will elicit SS to share content from their discussions, calling on individuals as needed and responding the the discussion as needed. SS will share content on specific talking points with eachother.

Delayed Error correction (1-2 minutes) • To correct any mistakes noticed during the lesson

SS will be asked to correct the answer the following prompts: When speaking in addition to I would like to order a hamburger When speaking about the past My greatest achievement is when I TT will correct SS as needed
