A Demo lesson that is part of the Cambridge TEFL program Aims: To introduce and practice collocations about crime in the context of controversial (American court) cases. This lesson will be constructed and executed as per class instructions

  • To practice reading for gist and skimming for content. To practice verbal and written communication skills

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Slides 1, 2, 3 Have learners talk in the main group about basic Lexus Have learners talk in small groups or pairs via breakout rooms about questions on slide 2 in the main group discuss slide 3

Text-Work (8-12 minutes) • To provide a task that exposes students to the target language via text

T-S display slide 4, explain three strikes as an idiom OCFB for understanding display slide 5 explain task -skim for detail then answer questions on the worksheet S-S assign students to breakout groups/ monitor groups T-S review answers and conduct OCFB in the main group

Language Clarificaton (8-12 minutes) • To provide a student centered task that eposes students to the meaning form and pronunciation of new Lexus

T-S Display slide 6, explains the difference between common and idiom cover the meaning of idioms in slide 6, followed by a short OCFB choral practice of contextualized idioms from slide Display slide 7, explain the meaning of the new Lexus in slide Display contextualized examples to demonstrate the form Play a 10-second original video file to provide a reference for context and pronunciation.

Controlled Practice (8-12 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills in a structured activity

Display slide 8, instruct students to work in pairs via breakout rooms to complete the activity Display slide 9 and conduct OCFB on task

Feedback and Error Correction (8-12 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Display slide 11, discuss common problems provide specific examples from pre-composed and spontaneous student work souces Display slide 12 conduct OCFB on new Lexus
