Description

This lesson is planned to help the students practice grammar ( was - were) and writing skill. The students will be shown some photos related to the previous lesson to warm them up. In groups, the students will match some questions with their answers. The students stick their answers on the board. The teacher highlights the use of two model answers and start teaching was/ were in affirmative, negative, Yes/ No questions and Wh. questions. The students do more practice. The students practice writing short sentences about the famous teachers in history.

Main Aims

  • To provide review to was and were in the context of the great library of Alexandria and the university of Al Karaouine.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide a product of simple sentences using was or were in the context of famous teachers in history.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (1-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The students sees some photos for the great library of Alexandria, the university of Al Karaouine and the university of London.The students say what these places are for.

Exposure (2-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

In groups, the students match questions with their answers to be exposed to was and were.

Highlighting (2-3 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

The students as a whole class sticks the questions and the answers on the board.

Clarification (2-4 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

The whole class matches was and were with the appropriate pronouns and nouns. The students practice the appropriate pronunciation.

Controlled Practice (2-3 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

In groups, the students complete the sentences with was or were according to the meaning. In an activity, the students complete the sentences with was or were.

More controlled practice (3-8 minutes) • To prepare the students for using was and were in different linguistic forms.

On the board the students work using wasn't, weren't, Was he - she - it - I ------------------ ? Were you- they - we ------------------ ? Wh article + was / were ------------------?

An activity (2-3 minutes) • To check the students' ability to use was and were in negative.

In pairs the students complete the sentences with the correct form according to the sentence.

An activity (3-4 minutes) • To practice using was or were in Yes / No questions

In groups, the students complete a Yes or No question with was or were.

Controlled Practice (2-4 minutes) • To provide students with controlled practice of the target language

Individually, the students write simple sentences about the famous teachers using was and were.

Semi-Controlled Practice (1-3 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

In groups the students answer some questions using was or were in their answers according to the questions. Write the answer for these questions. 1. How was the weather yesterday? 2. Where were you in the morning yesterday?

Error correction (1-5 minutes) • To help the students overcome their errors.

The students correct some of the common errors that they usually fall in while using was and were. The teacher asks "Is it correct to say" 1. I sick yesterday. 2. He were at home when it rained. 3. Sofia and Sara was in Istanbul last week. 4. She was in Top Kapi last weekend? 5. When the football match was ?

An extra activity (Just in case) • To expose the students to a free activity

In groups, the students write four sentences using was or were.
